You missed the stuff about they also want to ban any demonstrations or protests which they don't agree with but otherwise I think you got most of the key points regarding the erosion of our democracy
How can that be legal? And how long do you perceive this has been going on? A recent thing, or has their been some change of late?
I was going for brevity ;-) I fully suspect we'll see some form of UK internal passporting system under the guise of covid too. The actions of this government are worrying in the extreme. What with the treatment of asylum seekers, loosening of planning laws and general backdrop of jingoistic tubthumping, this is worryingly similar to something that happened 90 years ago at the outset of Germany being turned to fascism. That sentence alone should sound absolutely ridiculous. But is frighteningly accurate.
Making the country great again. Compulsory flying of a flag. State control of the media. State approved culture. Victimising sections of society. Portraying all other countries as enemies. Yep we’re ticking a lot of boxes.
Very interesting. I had an uncle (by marriage) who also escaped Poland / Ukraine during the war and ended up in South Yorkshire. We never really knew whether he was Polish or Ukrainian as he didn't ever speak particularly good English, and the border in that area moved so many times. He was Catholic, hence him marrying into the Irish side of my family so for many years we just assumed he was Polish, but his daughters have done some research and they think he was more likely to have been Ukrainian. Actually, this is all by the by. What we do know is that he witnessed horrors at the start of the war which were so distressing that he would never talk about them in any detail. Indeed, some members of the family think that he never bothered learning English particularly well so he didn't have to. But having settled in Wath Upon Dearne in the 1940's, he never once went back to his homeland, right up to his death in the 1990's. It's absolutely chilling when you think about it.
The intro music was chilling. Maybe it could be the Priti Patels walk on music whenever she does a media interview (rare, I know!)
My father never talked. A few bits that didn't make sense. As a kid I asked him where he came from. "A place doesn't exist where everyone is dead." You tend not to ask questions after that.
The filthy Tory turds are determined to ruin this country, they all want lining up against a wall and shooting.
I count about 11 of these on a regular basis, sometimes as high as 13 on a bad day. https://www.openculture.com/2016/11...ist-of-the-14-common-features-of-fascism.html
As far as I know its been going on for years...certainly more than 10, but it's not illegal and a few years ago the postal vote was very small in relation to the ballot box vote so it didn't really matter, but now postal votes can make up between 20 and 30% of the total electorate and postal voters tend to be very high in turnout compared to voters at stations, particularly in local elections as turnouts can be very low... 20 odd percent is not unusual these days.. In practise...Officers open the papers and place them face down on the table in front of the party observers, the snag is the crosses can usually be seen as ballot papers are fairly thin... and observers then keep a mental count. It does of course leave the process open to an Officer keeping a mental count and passing it on to his or her favoured party, who can either relax on a patch or call the big guns, extra leafletters or phone canvassers in. If the opening process took place as close as possible to the polling day it would remove any question marks.
There's not a lot you can say in response to that, so I won't even try. Although I'm grateful that you shared his story. It's important that these things aren't forgotten, no matter how distressing they were.
I eventually found out where the place that didn't exist was and took him back to stand where his home once was. After what he'd been through an act of unbelievable bravery on his part. Still can't really understand how he managed to bring up three kids and be a great dad after what he'd been through.
Yes. But not like you'd expect. It's not like the films. The past and the present sort of meet and stuff sort of seeps out round the edges. Hard to explain. What happened to him was horrific but it didn’t just spring up because somebody suddenly became evil. It started with the same sort of words we hear today and before you know it, you’re on the road to the same sort of horrors.
