Super John knows what is going to happen https://www.centralfifetimes.com/sp...g-play-off-outsiders-barnsley-match-class-97/
Thought he wasn't given enough time as manager. The injury list during his tenure was probably the worst I've ever known. Great Player n"all btw.
I think his problem was he couldn't change from being the Joker in the pack, to Man Manager overnight. No-one took him seriously, unfortunately
Hendrie made some good signings, including Hignett and Dyer, arguably didn't manage to replace Ward or Watson. Bassett brought in Shipperley and Miller which kind of achieved that. Had we retained De Zeeuw, I reckon we'd have gone up automatically. Chettle did a decent job once he arrived.
I've bumped into & had a couple of pints with John Hendrie when we've been walking our dogs. Obviously Boro' are his team, but he had good spells at Leeds & Barnsley & he speaks really truthfully about his times with us with real happiness
Permanent signings, yes, I agree, were great, but he also signed some poor loan/short term signings... Blackmore, Goodman, Pirri and Fumaca
Think Shez might have beaten him as joker. Saw em both together at the lamproom. He certainly couldn't take to John as manager as you rightly say. (Not in a nasty way though.) I think promotion in any walk of life, leads to drawing the line between colleagues, so to speak. Some handle it well. But a lot become disconnected and forget where they started.
On the day the Season Tickets went on sale for the PL back in 97, I was second in the queue. Got the STs sorted out, then hung around the ground and walked round for a bit, just to watch the queue. Anyways, the gates to Oakwell were open and around mid to late morning the players and Danny came out onto the pitch for a team photo. So I wanders onto the hallowed turf and had a chat with them all and got their autographs, every single one. The only piece of paper I had was my ST letter, so all the autographs are on there from that day. Anyways all during the photo shoot it was Super John that was joking around and cracking jokes with everyone, he seemed to me to be the Joker of the pack
