Oh Jesus Christ. Why would any half rationale person think it acceptable to put that on the web for the whole world to see forever. I cant get my head around how some people's minds work. That is just obscene. I don't know what else to say.
What annoys me is that Twitter will rightly ban the person, in fact I think they have already, but they won't report the crime to the police when they do so. All the big social media companies should be law have to have a nice big 'report this post to police' button on their banning or suspending page. If they suspend or ban an account for breaking the law (as this tweet does) then they should be pressing the button on the next page that reports it directly to the police. If someone uses twitter's servers and platform to post a criminal tweet then imo it's twitter's obligation to report the use of their platform in a crime. Simply deleting it and moving on isn't enough.
Really disgraceful comment. Sectarianism is a scourge. First week I was in digs in Leeds some of the University students in our shared accommodation decided to go for a few pints in the City. Over the previous few days I'd bonded with Alex an Engineering student from Pontefract and Rob a Medical student from Glasgow. Rob was a big football fan and told us he supported Rangers. We'd had quite a few jars when we finally ended up in the Yorkshire Hussars pub on the Headrow. There were around eight of us in our party and the conversation strayed onto the rivalry between Leeds and Man Utd and Rangers and Celtic. The produce of the bar had well and truly taken over when Rob blurted out " if there was a Fenian in this pub, I would gladly stab them." I am a Catholic and so I rightly took exception to his remark. I asked if I could have a word near the bar, where I told him I was a Fenian. His face was an absolute picture. He stuttered and stammered and said that as I was English and didn't support Celtic he made an exception for me. Three months after that spat , I returned to live in Donny and took a job in Local Government. I kept in touch with all the lads in my digs and around three years later was invited to attend Robs wedding in Glasgow. I'm glad I didn't go, because when I met up with Alex in Ponte for a pint when I relocated to Wakefield, he told me that Robs mates had got engaged in a brawl with some Celtic fans and one of our Leeds housemates who was also a Catholic.
If I did not know better Donny I would not believe your story but unfortunately it is far too common. Sectarian hatred is never far from the surface with that lot.
Sad. I think that old soldier will be battling hatred, for a long time yet. Respect, Sir. Sleep sound.x
I couldn't take in what was happening at first Ian. I really thought he was having a laugh. Unfortunately I witnessed similar feelings in my own family. My uncle fled Ireland at the height of the troubles. His sister had been abused by some British troops. He had absolutely no time for the Army, the Queen or anything connected to UK patriotism. We were having a discussion once about his behaviour and his wife ( my Aunt) and his daughter said they believed he had been an active member of the IRA and came to the UK to escape legal action. He lived well into his eighties in Doncaster and never spoke of his experiences back in Eire, but you could always sense that underlying menace regarding his thoughts about the military and the British establishment.
I appreciate the thought process behind this but I bloody hope this doesn’t happen. Some people spend one hour on the phone to report some absolute dross to 101, never mind making it bloody easy to do it. I think it would work better that if Twitter did ban someone then they can easily report it to the relevant Police Force rather than anybody being able to report. Edit: Just seen thats what you actually suggested. I need some kip.
Being an Irish/Scottish nationalist/Republican is a valid political opinion, with a lot of valid history and reasoning for it, but blokes like this literally destroy the genuine movement. I lived in Ireland and heard accounts from local people I met about atrocities committed by the English nearby. So I get it. I do. A foreign people invaded your lands, committed crime and then made you out to be the bad guys. Being angry at that is justified. But this is a 100 year old man who never hurt you or your countrymen, signed up to defeat fascism/authoritarianism and by all accounts had a heart of gold. His nationality is irrelevant. This is cowardly sectarian abuse purely for the sake of it.
I don't understand the motivation to take this off one web page and post it on another. Every single one of us disagrees with it, not one of us likes it, and it hasn't done any of us any good to see it, which we wouldn't have done if it had remained where it was posted and everyone ignored it. There's nothing to discuss because we all agree that this is ****. One of the main reasons why this sort of rubbish continues to get posted on social media sites is because it gets a reaction. That is just about the only motivation to do it. With stuff like this it really is a case of ignore the deliberately provocative rubbish and it will go away as without a reaction it gets lost in the background noise.
My dad served in northern ireland, my mums from northern Ireland, my grandad was a prison officer in maze prison in the height of the troubles, I visit the country every year from when I was christened there at 2 weeks old, I know people from both sides my family being protestant and in my nearly 40 years know it will never end, sadly.
