At our school, if you forgot your games kit there was a bin in the changing rooms full of forgotten shirts caked in mud, odd socks etc. Missing games due to no kit was not allowed, instead you had to fish something out of the bin and wear it (I once played football in extremely tight shorts and odd boots) So, where this is leading is - what was the bin or box with old kit in called at everyone's school? At ours, it was called the "steg bin", as in Lincolnshire a "steg" means an unhygienic person (adjective - steggy). I was wondering whether this term exists outside of Lincolnshire as a lot of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire terms cross over (eg "mardy" is pretty common in both places but no so much elsewhere, especially down south). Actually, I think that "steg" might be specific just to Sleaford, but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated! Cheers!
just lost property,at ours was always fat kids or midgets who lost stuff at ours, nothing fitted, if you forgot your towel you had to get dried with paper towels while games teacher watched, not very happy days
That's absolutely hilarious! Though to be fair it probably wasn't at the time. I remember drying myself on the non-muddied side of my rugby shirt once or twice, that was bad enough!
it was the skeg or skag pile. There was no bin it was just piled up in the corner of the gym, left to rot and go mouldy with sweat and goodness knows what. I'm sure they don't do it nowadays
They don’t even shower nowadays.... came as a massive shock to me. And forget your kit, just a detention.
Over last 7 years I've worked in primary schools as a sports coach doing PE lessons, sports clubs etc. Worked in 30ish different schools. You'd be suprised at the massive difference between them as far as kit is concerned. Plenty in the middle ground but I've had it where one sock missing and they have to sit reading and miss out. To kids doing sports in wellies or open toed sandles in normal uniform.......... To the OP, dip bin, dressing up box, spares. Probably more but can't think.
Me and my mate used to ‘forget’ our kit regularly so we could see who would be able to wear the daftest outfit from the bin. My mate was lanky and i was always quite short as a kid so I’d wear the biggest clothes and he’d wear the smallest.
At De La Salle our PE teacher was an ex- military man Captain Wall. God forbid if you forget your kit or worse still had not had it washed from the previous session. He used to line us up before a session and inspect us as if we were on the parade ground. I only forgot my kit once. As well as three strokes of the strap ( the Brothers and lay teachers loved corporal punishment at DLS), I did the session without a T shirt and wearing a pair of borrowed shorts and football socks.
In Merthyr the football we called 'Daps' are called 'Pumps' in Barnsley. and a tad unrelated -- In Merthyr we called the Golden Stuff 'Syrup' and the Black Stuff 'Treacle.' I think both Golden and Black are called 'Treacle' in Barnsley.
As a kid growing up in Donny we called Syrup of any colour "treacle. " My Mum used to put it in our daily bowl of porridge. We also used to call Muffins " pikelets". Was over in Lancashire for a couple of months on a training course and was confused when it was my turn to go for the bacon sarnies during the morning break, when they referred to what we in Yorkshire would call a soft round bread roll as a " barm cake".
Wow you are showing your age - he was even before my time - though I did know him through my Dad I genuinely cant remember what happened if you forgot your kit - I never did as I liked PE
No no no, a pikelet is like a thin crumpet but superior in every aspect. Treacle can be golden or black but is always Tate & Lyles with a picture of a dead lion surrounded by bees/wasps/flies (never could figure out what, but apparently is Biblical)
