Thank goodness she had the first one in time so she should have some protection (even if not the full amount that the 2nd dose would bring) and therefore lower symptoms. I hope she is ok.

The advice is a bit stronger than to “not go mad”. The same rules apply regardless of whether you’ve had the vaccine because you can still catch it and pass it on if you’ve been vaccinated.

Currently no one knows if you’re any less likely to catch it, or any less likely to pass it on, if you’ve had the vaccine, just that the disease is less severe.

In a few months time we could have 100,000+ cases a day but with very few getting seriously ill because the majority have been vaccinated (but are still catching it). At that point in time there will be huge public pressure to return to normal. However, that would put those that haven’t been vaccinated at significant risk of catching it (imagine 50% of the population are immune to the disease and going about their daily lives as normal, but are asymptomatic carriers). If we opened everything up we’d effectively be conceding that the rest of the unvaccinated population are highly likely to catch it. They won’t have severe disease because they’re in the low risk groups, but long-COVID has been known to effect people of all ages.

Hopefully the vaccines prevent transmission as well as disease!

She had the jab on Monday, works in the NHS and in her 20s. Came to ours for xmas dinner, both daughters begin to feel unwell over the weekend so both get tested and positive. All the house now self-isolating and only myself besides those two got symptoms.
