Yep, it's up to them... Just like any decisions one takes are theirs. You're quite correct.

Well its not just the lights I was thinking of. If people get real trees don't the needles fall off before Christmas?

Hope not. I bought one yesterday to stick out the front and was wondering the same thing...

Perhaps some people want to enjoy Christmas for a bit longer, especially after the year we've all had.
Perhaps some folk are simply lazy.
A few years ago, a family in Dodworth put up their Christmas decorations in September, as a family member had developed a life limiting illness meaning they wouldn't live to see Christmas Day. There were plenty of individuals complaining about it, despite not knowing (or caring) about their circumstances, or it being any of anyone else's business.

We don't usually put ours up until the second week of December. However, this year, our village has agreed to host a Christmas tree trail, so that families can walk around the village and "judge" the best entries. There have been around 150 entries. There is a light switch on, on Saturday. On the back of that, our street has started to trim up early, and to be fair, it's already looking very Christmassy.
I'm not usually a fan of early decorations, but this year, I'm all for it.

Thanks BigLil. I'm not really talking about this year specifically though. I know it's been a crap year :(

Where I used to live in Wokingham (nr Reading) there was several houses along one main road who used to put out their Christmas Lights around their trees outside every September, without fail. There were also another two houses (that I knew about) that just left them up all year round. One of them had a Santa Light as well. Not too bad during the summer when you can't see them lit up, but Spring/Autumn time it just looks daft

I never take ours down. Then again, I never put them up, either. I leave that all to The Boss.:D

I've just come back from the local garden centre where I have just bought a real 7 ft Christmas tree.

The bloke on the till asked me "are you going to put it up yourself? "

"Certainly not" i replied "it's going up in the living room like we do every year "

They shouldn't. Most trees you buy between now and Christmas were all cut around the same time (usually early November), so leaving it late to buy doesn't mean it'll last longer. Cut an inch or so off the trunk and leave it to soak outside in cold water for 2 days min. Then bring inside and avoid radiators or fires too close. Stick it in a stand that you can top up with water and it'll last well into the New Year.

As for it being too early?? Each to their own, I guess. We've gone a couple of weeks earlier than normal - tree went up Saturday - but as everyone says, it's been such a schite year that folk are looking for something to cheer them up, so crack on.

Because they've had a **** year, and anything they can do to cheer themselves up should be encouraged.

Was really tempted to put mine up at the weekend but couldn't do it! Will do it this Sat. Think we all deserve an extended Christmas this year to be honest, if it makes people happy. Had some mulled wine already though :)

Knew the question before opening the thread.

We've put ours up this weekend, the earliest ever - trying to give our kids a bit of excitement in whats been a **** year before Boris comes in and pisses on it.

Ours went up last weekend and we got a second one for the new extension as we spend quite a lot of time in there while doing dinner or one of us working in there during the day.

The missus loves Christmas and as we cant do any of the things we'd typically do through December, putting the tree up a week or so early doesn't seem much of a chore. We've started going for evening walks as there are less people around and its been nice to see lights and trees up already.

Hopefully there are a few others doing similar and having our tree lit up in the bay window brings a little bit of joy to others.
