Anyone recommend a good one? I'm a bit naff with computers, and the last two I've bought have been utter dross. Had an unbelievable day and managed to bag 3 job interviews, and I really need to prepare without having to wait for my Mrs to finish work so I can use her work laptop. All I need from it really is for it to be up to date, Microsoft programs, reasonably priced, and be able to do all of this without taking an age to load etc. Something which has been far too much to ask of my last two laptops. Cheers
Now is a great time to buy a new laptop or desktop. AMD have done great things with their Ryzen line of processors in the last few years and solid state drives have come on leaps and bounds. Any new machine you buy now (highly recommend going with a Ryzen-based system, I think 4000 series is the latest for laptops and 5000 for desktops) will seem like an absolute rocket compared to a machine from 4 or 5 years ago. What was a high end processor a couple of years ago (think Intel Core i7), now has equivelants at the absolute bottom price point with Ryzen.
Windows 10 is a decent operating system... once you've gone through the registry and systematically destroyed the data harvesting
I've got a MacBook and a Microsoft Surface. The MacBook is far superior even though its 3 years older and you can get Microsoft Office on it. Only use the Surface for retro gaming emulators......
I still like Windows 7, which now benefits hugely from being unsupported and thus never getting effing updates
I’d always recommend a Mac, vastly superior to anything windows based. You can get some decent refurbished ones but still more expensive than an equivalent windows machine
Seconded Archey. Nice to hear some good news amidst all the recent doom and gloom. I don't know much about laptops either. When I bought mine the guy at PC World recommended one in the Hewlett Packard range and for what I want to do, it performs just fine. If you end up buying there ( PC World), don't let them talk you into buying all the " add ons". If you're not careful an item that should have cost circa £300 can end up nearly double in price.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm set to be made redundant on the 11th December, and as of yesterday, had sent lots of applications off without much luck. Then all of a sudden in a 2 hour window today, I was given 3 job interviews. Yeah my dad used to get stung with that every time he went to PC world.
I have considerable knowledge on many lap dancing clubs throughout the country. Lap tops? Not a clue.
My vote for Dell, too. My current machine is Inspiron 15 7000. Not cheap, but a very good performer. And quick.
From my recent experience I'd say good luck finding one in stock. Wanting a new one but need 1TB hard drive as i have over 500gig of photos on this one and everything in budget (400 ish...will go to 500 at a stretch) is out of stock for collection and delivery no matter where I look (1 was available for collection at the weekend....in London !). You have to go through the process of inputting your postcode before they tell you they are unavailable anywhere...just say Out Of Stock !!! If anyone can steer me towards one let me know where to look P.S. The one I have is HP and it's been nothing but trouble since I bought it about 4 years ago. P.P.S. Good luck with the interviews
Good luck with the interviews, go for an AMD processor and solid state hd as above, the only simple advice, don’t buy anything from pc world beginning with an A
I was very lucky throughout my entire working life in that I was never made redundant and never ever was out of work. It must be very worrying when you lose your job, especially if you have financial commitments/ Mortgage to pay etc. My two eldest sons have also never been out of work since leaving school/ college, but our youngest has for the majority of his working life been on Agency work. Last three years, he has been working for the Government in some capacity ( under the Official Secrets Act he can't say exactly what he does.) Absolutely delighted when he phoned us up a couple of weeks ago to tell us he had been offered a permanent job with a pension plan. The peace of mind his Mum and myself have enjoyed since then has been indescribable.
It depends how much you want to spend....if you're looking to keep it on the cheap side there's a brilliant lad at Rotherham computers , just outside Millmoor that can get new laptops if you want, but also has a number of refurbs...Windows 10, Solid state drives etc for a couple of hundred quid or less...very knowledgable and doesn't rip you off.
I've just had this issue. The only ones that seem to be in stock are the ones in a black Friday deal. Looks like I'm putting buying one on hold for now.
