I read with keen interest the heated debate on here re compulsory vaccinations and found it v educational. Certainly opened up my mind a fair bit.
In that debate, the pharmaceutical companies got lots of stick for their alleged obsession with profit.
Given todays news I have a question (no ulterior motive involved) for the anti-pharma posters.....what's your opinion on AZs approach re release of the vaccination on a non profit basis to the world, with special emphasis on getting the treatment to those under privileged countries around the world?

I think it is great that they won't initially profit from the vaccine whilst people worldwide get to choose if they want to risk it or not.

Well without knowing the facts. how much public money has gone into Research and Development (R&D) I know Pharmaceutical company’s spend quite a lot of their budget on R&D. Also, hasn’t this been unprecedented in that knowledge has been widely shared in a Global quest to find a vaccine. Of course not for profit is very welcome, but if what I’ve mentioned is correct then it’s what we should expect

A massive thumbs up from me. Also great that the vaccine doesn't need ridiculous refrigeration like the others.

If it’s down to choice it’s the one for me.

It’s no profit for the poorer countries isn’t it? Not complaining like, the system we live in is one of profit so providing it on a cost basis to those that can’t afford is grand. Suspect they will be waiting in line mindst

Haven't read about it, if they're doing what you said then that's excellent. As humans that's what we should do, share knowledge.

I'm not a great fan of these corporations, but as I understand it they don't necessarily pursue the patent claim...allowing poorer countries to produce a cheap generic version for their own people.

One question is, is the vaccine at cost to the developing countries, or is the vaccine at cost to the developing countries *if* something in future?

Where the "if" in future could be exclusive drugs contracts, easier regulations or other sweeteners to recoup more monies in future.

AZ is the Oxford vaccine. You've confused AZ with Pfizer.

Massive amounts of the research funding for the AZ/Oxford vaccine came from the taxpayer.

This is the point I was making regarding making it not for profit, but I wasn’t sure about the source of funding in R&D.
