But the quote earlier proves my point, the kid who said he thought it was to do with the Yorkshire ripper
We took on the state in 72 and 74 . And we would have brought them to the table in 84-85. As I said lots of political novelists with inside info have reported how near we came even without the notts miners . The biggest irony was if she had directed the industry coming into the south and south east at the time into the mining areas instead of Tory and Swing seats not one miner would have complained
Im not undermining the sentiment at all, more the fact, in my eyes, the vast majority of people chanting scab have no understanding behind why they're doing so
Since when has a chant at a football match made sense ? It just seems that with all the horrible chants that exists the scab chant brings out the abolitionists and disgust . I’m well aware younguns don’t know what the chants about although I suspect a lot more do than gets credit for on here
'People with right wing views'??!? Behave yerssen. I lived through it too, saw what it did to my friends, their families and the community, but find it utterly embarrassing to hear it now. Chanted by one group of blokes that weren't even born at another group the same. When you go to Germany, do you call everyone Nazis, or goose-step round the streets??!
Yeah that's true. You don't have to have been alive at the time to not like something. People shout scabs because of what those people or their relatives did that affected their own relatives. We weren't born during the world wars but we haven't forgotten that either.
I beg to differ. The power station stockpiles would have run out without the Notts production. It wasn't even the first time the Notts miners had done this. They scabbed in the 1926 General Strike as well, when they set up their own rival union, just as they did in 1984.
Don’t get it, might have been pertinent at the time but totally cringeworthy now. Rather than being upset about it their fans find it hilarious and just use it as a piss take.
Why shout scab at those from the notts area they realised scargill was selling them down the river so decided to carry on working
I think you have totally missed the point of my ‘cringe’, Marlon. I totally, totally understand the whole meaning of the term ‘scab’. I choose to always opt out of miners strike debates, even though I was directly affected by it, just because of how high tensions still run, to this day, on the subject. However, the ‘cringe’ was at 17 year old boys hurling the word at Forest fans with less than zero understanding of the meaning behind it. Hence why I asked them, only to be told they understood it to be ‘summat to do with the Yorkshire Ripper’. So whilst I understand, Marlon, that you are a very passionate and vocal poster, on this subject, please don’t put me in the ‘not affected’ bracket old mate, as you are wide of the mark on that one.
I'll never forgive or forget what the Thatcher lot did, however the average Forest fan will have had nothing to do with the strike. The cause still goes on but it's got nothing to do with football. Let's not forget a certain Brian Clough was very supportive of the miners.
Maybe he’s one of a few that don’t know then . But tbf there’s times many folk come on here claiming that the vast majority of these young uns don’t know what they’re chanting which I find ridiculous them coming from mining areas . I think some of them think it validates their post to state they don’t know what they’re chanting .
I don’t get that logic, why remember or commemorate anything which happened before you were born then?
Wouldn’t bother mate, he’s a WUM who says intentionally provocative things in order to get bites and then runs off giggling
Amount produced by Nottingham was insignificant to amount being shipped in from abroad. Remember going to Cleethorpes one day and seeing a convoy of about 40 trucks of cole going along the motorway with same amount of police vans full of police. They would have bankrupt the country to prevent the union from winning.
[QUOTE="Micky Finn, post: 2594711, member: 6807". When you go to Germany, do you call everyone Nazis, or goose-step round the streets??![/QUOTE] Silly boy.
Im from a family of ex miners as I'm sure alot on here are my dad always enjoys beating forest for that reason. I dont shout it but I cant see problem its banter, theres loads of songs I find more cringeworthy for example when the ponty used to sing about alex mowatt hating leeds scum when he actually supports them.
Possibly the same one for me too - never been back since. Barnsley, Blunts and also Wednesday apparently
