Aged 68. During the 1979/80 season, Barnsley were very keen to bring Phillips to Oakwell from Rotherham United and for him to partner our new centre forward Trevor Aylott. The transfer saga seemed to drag on for weeks. Eventually, Barnsley withdrew from the deal, signed Derrick Parker instead and Phillips moved onto Hull City.
John Breckin has a lovely eulogy for him on the official Rotherham site.

Oh no one from my era there. I played against him a couple of times on that pitch that used to be at the bottom of Harborough Hill. Was that area called The Fleets? He was a Barnsley Boys star at the time and I was a run of the mill, no hope goalkeeper. He stung my palms a few times.
Shame he never played for his home town club.

He was an extremely fast striker. I was really excited at the time that Trevor was supposed to be signing for us any day. If I'd had my way, we'd have signed both Parker AND Phillips.:D

Sad news. He was working as a painter in Cheshire before I moved over here. I saw him quite a few times on my rounds in the Tarporley area. Nice bloke.

Don't be greedy, this is Barnsley FC we're talking about now lol. :)

My wife remembers him playing for Barnsley boys in the mid-late 60s

    RIP Trevor

Played against him numerous times in the sixties when he played for Raley. Always stood out in those early teenage years. R.I.P.

Getting all the story's from my wife now. She says her sister used to be Trevor's girlfriend at school and the Barnsley Boys also used to play games up Dodworth at the back of a pub (she can't remember which one). Also her Mum used to know Trevor's Mum and used to visit her regularly where they lived on Clyde Street near Oakwell

She used to walk up and watch Barnsley boys on a Saturday morning. Greenhoff brothers, Jimmy and Brian, plus Geoff English also played around that time for Barnsley boys

RIP Trevor. Pretty sure he would have been an all time Rotherham favourite. Good laiker.
