A good day for Geraint Thomas he put time in all the big favourites on the opening stage.

Got to be the huge favourite with 3 time trials & an on paper pretty weak line up.

Great race for us Brits with Simon Yates expected to be his nearest challenger, James Knox a contender to finish in the top 10, G. Hart & Swift key support riders for Thomas, Dowsett a contender for the time trials & two young Brits also riding for Lotto.

yes, Sagan has always targeted the spring classics over the Giro.

amazing time gaps from G back to the other GC contenders from such a short time trial. All the competition to G now have to make time before they can build a buffer to him in the other 2 longer TTs. He has a great chance assuming his form is as good as it seems to be after the Tirenno-Adriatico

it was terrible windy day and bumpy greasy road, lots bottled it but Thomas went for it, could have come off like others, but luck on his side for once, should lead all way unless he gets stuck in a snowdrift in week 3

Yes & he’s only doing it because they’re paying him to race

They're on Quest at 7pm every night but the quality is appalling though they do have Bradley Wiggins on as a pundit.

    Wow

That ‘minor crash’ in the neutral zone before racing proper began yesterday wasn’t so minor.

It seemed strange that he dropped 12 minutes off the back of that little incident. Not so little as it turns out.

He’s some warrior Geraint Thomas - he’s just dropped out of the race with a pelvis fracture - he did the whole stage yesterday, 150km, the best part of 100 miles and with steep climbs, with a bloody fractured pelvis.

Awful luck what happened with someone’s discarded bottle, and I hope he hasn’t done himself lasting damage by riding on the injury.

Gutted for him. Didn’t he do the same in a Tour de France years ago? Maybe 2013 or 15. Fractured his pelvis on the first stage & carried on riding in support of Froome for another 3 weeks. Different breed these cyclists.

Some of the injuries they get & often ride on with are horrific.

**** from a British point of view with Yates also losing time but blows the race wide open. No real strong teams in the race so could be the best grand tour in years if every mountain stage is as chaotic as yesterday’s.

Miguel Angel lopez going after time trial finished up with a puncture wound that just missed an artery, another who was in with a shout.

Could make the race open like the tdf.

That was bad today. They have enough to contend with with camera bikes and team cars, but for helicopters to start causing accidents....... wow. Broken back?
