Best beaches are further north along the coastal route bit the sea front at Whitley bay isn't bad to blow the cobwebs away. Similarly Seaham further south.

Tynemouth nice walk along the pier or along the Tyne to North Shields. Or nice beach at King Edwards Bay and walk along Long Sands toward Cullercoats and Whitley Bay.

Whitley bay & Tynemouth both have good beaches, you can get the metro out to them from town aswell. If you're feeling more ambitious druridge bay further north is good although it's in the wrong direction if you're heading back to town.

Tynemouth. Castle, lovely beaches, barely any crappy "amusement" arcades, what more could you ask for?

Just go in the Crown Posada on the Quayside and walk to the Free Trade Inn on the Tyne best view of Millenium bridge and the Tyne Bridge from the beer garden . Or Tynemouth if you really do need a beach walk

So we ended up at Sandhaven beach, what a cracking little place, I’ll definitely be returning, beach was absolutely brilliant, found a pub on beach front that served up some nice food. Well worth a visit if your up that neck of the woods

Brother in law ( a Mackem) was born and bred in Marsden close to South Shields. First time
I met his folks up there after him and my sister were wed, I was extremely surprised how as to
how nice the coastline and surrounding areas are up there.

My Sis went to College in Walsall with a lass from Whitley Bay and again when I was invited
to her house with my sister, I was impressed with the beauty and cleanliness around those parts.

My dad was from Sunderland (moved to Thurnscoe in 1936 when the pit where my grandad worked closed) so we often used to visit relatives up there. One of my favourite places was Seaham Harbour. Went there in 2009 and it was unrecognisable. Marsden Grotto is definitely worth a visit though.
