I read this book back when I was a dopey teenager and found it fascinating. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I swallowed it all, in fact I thought it was a bit over-hyped and self-indulgent, but as a fan of sci-fi and suchlike, it certainly gave me something to think about. Not sure how the photos come across through the kindle edition, but may be worth a punt if you like this kind of thing. I might even give another go myself, see how I view it with my older (but still just as dopey) head.

"Why do religious texts often refer to Gods who descend from fiery chariots? Why do modern space launch sites look like constructions on the plains of Nazca in Peru? Was God an astronaut?"

read his books, but agree with a lot of his sceptics in many ways. He seems to use a good deal of poetic licence. However it does make you think though.

As a kid, I found it fascinating. Speaking with my archaeologist head on it's a huge bucket of the loosest stool water.:)

agreed, however it does stimulate thought and possibilities. I mean you never know what may be in a galaxy far far away ?

The Sunday Times quote did make me smile:
"A kind of archaeological Jimi Hendrix."

I was very impressed at the time....unfortunately it now looks like a load of balls written by a shyster.

The most plausible part of Eric Von Daniken's book is the early map of the middle east, which has Giza (Egypt) at its centre. The projection factor used to draw the map would indicate that it could only have been done from miles in the air directly above Giza. A projection factor is what enable a spherical shape to be represented two dimensionally.

I remember reading it as a teenager in a paperback book - remember those? and thinking it raised some interesting questions
Now as a few others have said I think his theories are total horse dung.
    2 fundamental questions
Why would spacemen come and have a bit of a laugh and clear off again
How would they get here - all our science supports Einsteins theory that inter stellar travel is effectively impossible due to light speed being impossible to exceed

“Why would someone go somewhere where they’d appear fantastically intelligent whereas in reality they’re not, it’s just that the people they’re conversing with are just uneducated?” Because Twitter hadn’t been invented yet?
