Is it cheaper to pay 5 poor players £1,000 a week or one good player £5,000 a week? Remember the manager and ceo of the club have complained we have too many players
Wigan Points Per Game without Moore in the starting line-up:- 0.71 Wigan Points Per Game with Moore in the starting line-up:- 1.54 Best £3m they never spent. The mind boggles at the business logic that dreamt this transfer would benefit us.
How poor Moncur was for us, his goals and performances for Luton weren’t nice to see last season which could’ve easily cost us a place in the top two. I hoped then these owners learnt the lesson of selling to a direct rival. This season however they seem to have gone one better in strengthening both Wigan and Hull with players on decent contracts here. Makes no sense. Ive no doubt the same mistakes will be made next season too.
They hired Daniel Stengel who was brilliant... and then sold his best players, replaced the, with novices and sacked him. I did try.
He did, but that's not the point. All players leave eventually. The trick is to find adequate replacements. If that can't be done, because the prices being asked are too high, then come clean and say so. Don't crow about how good our transfer dealings have been, until you you start racking up the points.
I would say we have always had a revolving door of players as have other similar sized clubs to us.... I started going in 96 at the age of 8 and it's been the same all those years. We got into the premier league and came down losing our manager and captain followed closely by Ward Fjortoft and De Zeeuw the season after... We aren't reliant on loans now at least so when we do get good players at least we see a return from them and can reinvest. I don't know where this is new to anyone or something the current owners have come in and done that hasn't been the way before because it has and unless we start spending millions we haven't got it will continue.
Previously was it our policy to a. Sell one and replace with 5 b. Rule out a large percentage of potential signings based purely on their age (is that strictly legal?) And c. Select the players for the manager?
I remember last season when we played burnley in the f.a cup. We lost 1 nil but at half time conway was in the dugout talking to fans telling them they should be very excited for the January window. That window we sold potts and replaced him with jordan green and brought in george miller. Conway more like conman.
I’ve been watching Barnsley since 1966 and, although players have always been sold, that was never the object of the exercise . Even in the dark days of the fourth division, there never seemed to be a lack of ambition. We always seemed to be looking for glory. I don’t ever remember fans discussing how much money we could make from selling players, in fact I can’t remember money being mentioned at all. And I’m talking about times when kids brought a ball to the game and played football on the terraces. That dark!
In some positions it seems like we have. We've definetly replaced a few players with a lot. So many that Dane Murphy says the squad is too big. So many that Struber says the squad is so big.
