As time goes by, there seem to be more and more 3-lane roundabouts that are counter-intuitive. Common sense would say: left for left, middle for straight ahead, and right for right. Instead you get left for left/straight ahead and then two lanes for right turners. I'm sure it's all designed for maximum flow, but the number of drivers caught out is worrying. I can't use the Dodworth or Birdwell M1 roundabouts without straining to keep one eye on the vehicles in my blindspot at all times.
While we're on the subject of roundabouts, another bugbear of mine is that often the lane signs for those cases that @Old Goat mentions are way past the point of regular queues so by the time one knows one is in the wrong lane it's too late to avoid the wrath of those who are already familiar with the layout. There are often road markings further back, of course. Underneath the queuing vehicles...
My all-time favourite was years ago, following a couple of elderly ladies down the A1(M) northbound sliproad near Pontefract. I thought it a bit odd when, as we neared the end of the slip road, she started indicating left, instead of the usual right indication to let folks know you're pulling on. Then she slowed down to a crawl, before coming to a stop at the dotted lines. I had to stop too. Then she started looking left and right as if it was a typical junction, before finally pulling on and heading off up the A1.
I don't think so. He stopped as he approached the roundabout (from Darton.) - indicated to right turn - and started to make a sharp right turn into on coming traffic. He wasn't going to go round the roundabout at all.
Get cut up nearly every time I use it, all the way coming of the 36 turn off northbound ( several times a week) people having to cross over at the last second realising they’re in the wrong lane. Road markings don’t help.
I think the broken white line when you're entering the motorway is a give way to vehicles from the right, so I suppose she could be right...the A1 is notoriously difficult to enter when busy and only two lanes
Just seen this... The correct advice when joining motorways when busy...match your speed to traffic on motorway... IF the LH lane is occupied as you reach the merge point of the slip road you continue onto the hard shoulder matching speed to merge into a gap when it appears... do NOT slow down or stop
Are you sure? When I was learning to drive (15 years ago or so) I'm sure it was always that you can stop if you need to when entering the motorway. I've never heard that driving on the hard shoulder is the way to go. That sounds like a recipe for disaster, especially now that they've removed the hard shoulder in much of the M1
It’s 100% wrong, see above. As you say, it’d be a right recipe for disaster. Lots of roads don’t have one and even if it did, if you’d matched your speed then you’d just be travelling miles on the hard shoulder at the same speed as the car to your right.
He will probably reply telling you you're wrong then proceed with a totally irrelevant, war and peace-esque description of the inner workings of a motor vehicle
I was 99% sure that was the case. But when someone posts so confidently about something, I started second guessing myself.
You have to match the speed of the motorway when joining, and slowing down to join isn't ideal but cars already on the motorway should be keeping an eye on the entry slip and moving over where safe to do so. Going on the hard shoulder at 70mph would be extremely dangerous.
I have a feeling that he has me on ignore as he never replies to anything I say to him. He’ll see all your posts though so he’ll still know he’s wrong.
He doesn't reply to anyone when he's in the wrong, don't worry. I suspect he won't reply to this thread again.
