I watched it in the social club, I was there!. First game I ever watched on Sky. Drove 10 miles through to the ground to watch it.

    I miss the social club.

My first away game was also at Millmoor. A 2-1 defeat on Boxing Day 1973. Brian Mahoney scored our goal.

Went to this game but dont remember anything about it other than I sat in the cantilever stand at Hillsborough. Also went to Villa away in ZDS or Simod cup.

Didn’t Simon Garner score the winner? For a change.....

Last few minutes if I recall. Good Reds following, as ever.

Enjoyed the match what stuck out for me was the tackle on taggart which left a big gash in his side there was no rolling about or play acting physio on cold sponge and straight back up can’t see any of the overpaid prims donnas doing tat nowadays

Really enjoyed seeing that match again. How can thirty years have gone by since that night when we actually came away from Hillsborough with a win! I saw it live when I was stationed in Germany and the BFBS schedules included Sky 1 at the time. I couldn't believe it when this match was chosen for Sky coverage so that I could watch it from my home at RAF Rheindahlen.

For a "minor" competition it was a really competitive game. Originally called the Full Members Cup for the top two divisions it was called the Zenith Data Systems Cup for this season and the Reds did very well in it, with wins over West Brom (5-3 away - Banger hat trick), this match and then a 2-1 win against Forest at home. We went out in the northern area semi final to Everton so were denied a first trip to Wembley.

A few things stood out for me in this match though. Wednesday went on to be promoted to the top flight that season and had a very good side including our former starlet David Hirst and the mercurial Trevor Francis up front, Danny Wilson pulling the strings in midfield and Carlton Palmer actually looked like a player at centre half. Naturally his manager Ron Atkinson and the Sky pundits cited a mistake by him for our third equaliser but, in fact, it was a superb bit of play by Brendan O'Connell to send him off balance before firing past Pressman. Dean Connelly poked it in (was this the ONLY thing he did in a red shirt for us?). Hirst bagged a hat trick for them but we just wouldn't give it up and two excellent Owen Archdeacon goals, and the last one from Connelly, forced it into extra time. Penalties followed - just how GOOD have we been over the years at penalty shoot outs? Banks, Saville, O'Connell and Archdeacon did the business for us while Sheridan put one over the bar and Steve McCall hit a tame one for Clive Baker to save, and win the match for us.

Baker was a great shot stopper and it is a shame that he wasn't taller - had he been a six-footer he would have been a top flight regular. Gerry Taggart was superb, along with Gary Fleming, at the back and the skill levels right through the team were extremely high. It was this season, of course, when were denied a promotion play off spot with that agonising late result from Brighton which meant we missed out on a shot at the big time. Mel Machin had his critics but this was a very good side that he put together and they could have done better than they did.

Thanks to Kendraytyke for posting these great memories. Cracking game of football and a great result. Nice to get one over the Owls for a change :)

was a great atmosphere, We were parked up
In a duel carriageway and marched down to the ground en mass from the coaches, seemed to be thousands of reds fans there.

the team bus pulled up behind us on the way back, always remember machin was beaming from ear to ear sat on the front seats

    It's always a pleasure.
The funny thing about this game is that some Wendy fans say they threw the game citing Big Ron doing first half commentary as them not taking the game seriously!

I don't think there was any doubt that both sets of players were taking the game seriously. These days there would have been two teams of fringe players on show. This match was played out like a normal Yorkshire derby match, where everything REALLY mattered. Taggart's baiting of Palmer during that second half altercation was typical Gerry. He was amongst the true greats for me, even though we didn't have in at Oakwell for long enough. Attitude second to none.

My overriding memory is about five minutes from time when Mal Shotton came over to right where I was clinging to the fence to rouse the Barnsley fans, not that we needed it. Quality player, quality day out.

Yes was a great turnout loved it, spoke to a mate( who posts on here) after the match had a bet on the reds to win 1-2 & picked up a tidy sum, around £100 I think.
