Boris has reversed the decision to charge imported NHS workers double to use it Credit to Starmer for grilling him on it and highlighting it in PMQ yesterday and credit to Boris for seeing he really was on a losing path with this one and agreeing to reverse it https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-52761052 I still dont like or understand why non NHS workers have to pay twice though surely if you are paying Tax and NI in this country you shouldnt have to pay again to use the health service - but Baby steps I suppose
I actually wasn’t aware of this surcharge until recently. Guess it makes a mockery of the argument that people come over here just to abuse the NHS.
Agreed but 2 days of shaming lead to this, is that leadership and listening or peer pressure? Blair didn't give way on Iraq, however so I'm pleased he changed course. You wouldn't want to politically die or be mortally wounded on an issue like this. I do still firmly believe there are moderates in the Tory party. He needs to get rid of JRM, Gove, Cummings, Raab, Patel, Grayling, Truss (pork goods) and Kwateng pronto they're unskilled, unqualified and damaging.
NO credit from me , he’s argued for it all along even acknowledging the two nurses but said the need of the country is greater , Credit the Tory MPs who rebelled against him to make him change his mind though .
That's it Tory rebels, there's at least a movement inside the party which isn't totally morally corrupted.
I’ve always said that most MPs Whatever party are in it to better the country and all have different ideas of how it should be . There are exceptions especially in the Tory right .even the Tory Mps that voted against a harsh or no deal Brexit which cost them their careers . I have a lot of time for these people which gives us all hope that idealists of whatever colour won’t always get their way .
Political imperative, I'm afraid Farnham. The sad thing is, Boris will actually get credit for it whereas it is Sir Keir who has really instigated it.
To be honest credit isnt really the right word as far as Boris is concerned - this unfair charge was imposed by the Tories - its a bit like giving a guy credit when he promises to stop beating his wife
Tony Benn once said, " There are two kinds of politicians, weather vanes and signposts. Signposts point out the direction to take and weather vanes follow the prevailing wind".
Very rare I disagree with you mate. (I admire you along at with many others on here who try to fight for justice for the lower classes) But only in the fact they say a leopard can’t change its spots. Yes I agree lots of tories, in fact most didn’t support Brexit. And I always try to accept people for who they are. But on this issue the brains of the party knew it would have been an unmitigated disaster not to come to this decision. Boris will certainly have had second thoughts having received life saving treatment from the NHS that he will be forever grateful I’m sure.. I cannot bring myself to admire any Tory ( have you ever heard one say we need to look after the lower to middle class by clamping down on the tax dodging mega rich individuals and companies) no more than I would support any labour MP who are a disgrace to the party. I don’t necessarily hate anyone but hate what they stand for and I struggle to reconcile that. Please don’t see this as a criticism it’s only my view.
Anyone paying income tax and NI , shouldn’t have to pay again to get services , wether they are working in the NHS or not . The options for Boris were limited given he had named two immigrant workers as his life savers
