Think looking back this game wasn't great until the last ten minutes but what a ten minutes! Younger fans have a watch - this is when the Cup final was a fantastic occasion. Got to admit I did watch BBC coverage - didn't realise Cloughy was a commentator back then. Game also gave us that classic - if not overused question at a quiz about Sunderland in 79 and Villa in 81 - who was it in 80?
I think watching this match makes you realise how today’s falling down, feigning injury and grappling in the box at set pieces has come close to ruining the game.
I was there . Loads of Manure fans leaving at 0 - 2 with a few minutes left then running back in as the fight back started . Their faces at 2 - 3 was a picture .
Brooking. Watched it and amazed how many Scots and Irish on the park. I was also back there a couple of weeks later for England v Scotland in the home internationals.
I went to the England v Scotland game in 1973. From memory, Alan Ball scored in a 1-0 win. I took a Coach load of mates who all played for the same Sunday League team as me in Donny. We bought the tickets at preferential prices through the West Riding of Yorkshire FA. The Club had paid for the tickets so on the actual day of the trip, each lad was asked to pay for his ticket and coach fare. It soon became apparent that around ten members of the group had not showed up, so to avoid being late ,we had to set off without them. En route after discussions with the Treasurer and Chairman of the Club we agreed we would sell the tickets once we reached Wembley. On approach to the Stadium some Scots supporters shouted out through an open window " any spare tickets"? When our guy confirmed we had, they followed the bus all the way into to the car park. I got off the Coach and the Scots lads couldn't believe it when I let them have our ten tickets at face value. They stood amongst us for the entire game and at the final whistle we went to the "Green Man" pub near Wembley and the Scots lads treated me and a couple of mates to three or four jars. Happy days.
I was expecting a different outcome. So glad it worked out well. And fair play to you all for selling em at face value. You deserved your free ale .
A pretty ordinary game until the last ten minutes which were anything but ordinary. Besides from the last ten minutes my abiding memory of this game was Willie Young.
At one point I was worried that the Scots lads could cause trouble, but we explained everything to them and they were as good as gold. As it was the era of Stan Flashman, there was a warning on the tickets about selling above their original value and as they had been booked in my name, there was no way I was going to countenance ripping anyone off. If I remember correctly, we had a block booking at the Palais de Dance in Nottingham at night and some of the lads from Scotland accompanied us and I understood that some years later, a couple of our lads and their wives used to meet up with a couple of Scots lads and their wives and went on holidays together, so everything turned out OK for all concerned.
