The public I mean not government. Although I suggest they don't care to the same level no it's just an accepted thing.
People obviously don't care because we have had to be trained in how to wash our hands and not to cough on each other. If we actually cares we wouldn't need to be. And that's not everyone, I'm not saying it's you but it is the population at large who only care when the media guilt trips them into caring. Case in point clapping the NHS suddenly. Many people are doing that just because it's the done thing. I wish they did it because it's how they've always felt

It’s utterly bonkers to even compare C19 and Flu.

We are a month in and without social distancing the death toll would be horrific.

I’ve asked this before and none of the people who seem to think herd immunity is the best method have even answered it. If it’s so contagious that 70 medics in Italy have lost their lives and already there’s at least 6 in the Uk have died because of C19, how many die from Flu after contracting it from patients?

These are healthy people dying, in hospitals that as yet aren’t absolutely swamped, so they have access to the correct equipment.

What we are doing now is the only way to beat this pandemic. Any other options is just plain mental.

Please don't fall out with me.

How are we going to beat it by the current method? How do we get out of the situation we're in? We've seen how quickly the virus spreads. If we come out of lockdown it happens again just as quickly. We have attempted to eradicate many infectious diseases and failed in all but small pox. Every cold and flu vius that ever existed still exists. How many people are going to die due to poverty compared to how many die from Covid-19?

We are going to let it spread, just trying to make it happen slowly. Herd immunity is still the goal in my opinion, it's the only way out. I can't imagine waiting for a vaccine is viable. Slowly allowing it to spread seems to be the only solution.

The only way to defeat this will be through a vaccine in my humble opinion.

Taking a chance and going back to work is going to kill 100s of 1000s. It doesn’t even bear thinking about.

This is a global pandemic which is effecting every country on the planet. The economies will recover. This isn’t like any other recession in history. The world is on life support at the moment and it will take a global effort to sort it once we get to the other side.

And I’ll never fall out with you mate. Just because we might have different opinions.

I am of the opinion that poverty and civil unrest is going to kill a lot more.

Not that I know of a good solution. It's always going to be the lesser of evils.

Don't you think testing to identify who's had it will allow a (slow admittedly) route back to normality?

Ultimately I'm an optimist in the Boserupian sense that we will find solutions through combinations of drugs that mitigate symptoms to an extent, will scale up hospital capacity, find routes to mass testing and, eventually, a vaccine.

We will see what government policy is, if the lockdown is lifted before we have a vaccine I think that will give us the answer.
Waiting at least 12 months for a vaccine doesn't seem viable at all.
