I would have thought given that a lot if staff will have to be at home that this will happen in most schools.

My youngest. who is in Y11 has effectively got 5 months off school from tomorrow, or so it seems. No exams, and college not starting til mid September.

They are still playing it by ear.... not sure if it will be that long. Could be weeks... no exams before July though; if at all.

Think the education secretary announced today that exams were off.

the children identified as children of key workers or those classed as vulnerable - is attendance voluntary and will they be taught as 'normal?'

What if they don't want to be at school as their mates will be playing out etc.

There's lots of things people need to realise and consider. Both parents need to be key workers. It's likely to be one school in an area where you go to, with different teachers, and mixed age classes. It's designed for those with no alternative, and a commitment to going each day. Personally I think most kids' education will probably be better served by being at home if possible doing the online learning schools are setting. But if people don't have an alternative then the option us there.

I don't think that's true - it said in the Guardian earlier that Downing St confirmed it only had to be one parent, not both as originally thought yesterday.

Just seen that. Contrary to all the other language about keeping only a skeleton network of schools open and most children should not be attending. The underpinning principle is to keep social contact to a minimum, but with an acceptance vital service providers may need child care, not to allow a non key worker to then to work uninterrupted from home.

Seems utterly daft that to me. How is that any different to single parent families that don’t have a key worker parent? If there is someone who isn’t a key worker then they should look after the children like other families are having to do. We’re having a meeting at 8am tomorrow to find out what on earth we are doing.

But what if the key worker earns a lot less than the non key worker. Who is going to go to work?

The key worker. No doubting it's difficult but the purpose is not for economic decisions (the fallout of which will be massive for most people). Its to enable those vital staff directly responding to COVID_19 to work. Which may be the less well paid, which is indicitive of how little we value key workers sadly.

That's not the reality of what all people will do though is it? Hopefully measures announced today will help people make that choice.

What's the difference between that and a single parent?

The difference is that it's a choice for them a single parent has no choice I guess.

I imagine yes for the former but the latter group I would hope not.
