You would hope so but there will be a fair few fans stuck in the dark ages and there is bound to be some homophobic chanting - possibly a few players and managers might be unhappy as well but I would think the majoritiy within the game would be fine for it. Its not a problem for Womens football where there are some openly gay players and no one gives it a second thought

I assumed there was some already, having both male and female relatives that are gay and proud be so It doesn't make any difference to me one way or the other. If they play for us all I ask is that they are good footballers, nothing else matters.

Really wouldn’t bother me but coming out did Justin Fashanu no favours.

I think they need to stop making a song and dance about it. I hope they'd take the attitude. "Your gay so what?" It's the media circus afterwards and award of a gold star for being gay that I think puts perspective players off coming out.

Yes. If ignorant, intolerant, bigots have an issue with it, so much the better.

I agree but there is no chance the media would allow it. As soon as a footballer was seen out with his boyfriend the media would have a field day.
On a flippant note would we now have WAGABs to describe their partners

I would hope that anyone that has a problem with it would be banned from attending matches, so the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. Quick way to get the thugs and neanderthals out of the stadiums.

I think once a player is actually out, any homophobia in the stands directed towards them would be stamped out quickly by the non-neanderthal fans, and bans given to the perpetrators. The support for those brave enough to come out gay would overwhelm any derogatory chants from the stands.

I think people are quite thick skinned when it comes to stuff like that. I think the main problem I'd have if I was a gay footballer would be people quizzing me about it all the time.

Because banning the racists is working so well :(
Seriously I’d love to agree with you, but the authorities are so inept I can see no positive outcome

Should it be HABAWAGS - thats easier to say - or do we stick to ladies first?

I like HAWAGABAs. Easy to say and doesn't put either gender first (actually it puts both genders first!)

Agreed. Our fans can’t even cope with someone having a slightly different hairstyle, or wearing gloves or having brightly coloured boots without them making a fuss and derogatory comments. There’s no way they could handle someone being gay without passing ‘joking’ comments every two seconds.
