'Iconic' picture of Jones grabbing Gascoigne's ******** in a fairly aggressive manner: no recollection of any calls for him to be charged with sexual assault. Marler playfully 'fingers' AWJ's ******** yesterday leading to calls for him to be charged with sexual assault. Will be interesting to see how the rugby authority deals with this. Edit* Vinnie
I don't want to see retrospective action taken against Vinnie Jones any more than I want Mark Twain's corpse exhumed and it put on trial for using racially inflammatory language.
Is that how we judge what is acceptable now though? What people got away with years ago? If that's the case then it must be a free for all at the BBC studios
So he should be charged then (clearly guilty) and placed on the sex offender's register? AWJ has publicly stated he's aggrieved by it.
Depends entirely on what she wants and how he actually feels. I'm not sure what should be done as I don't know the context or the players reaction or feelings. What I do know is that it's utterly pathetic to hide behind 'but I play sports' as an excuse to act despicably which far too many of them do.
Jones himself wants the Rugby authorities to take retrospective action. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/11123516/joe-marler-video-wyn-jones-balls-england-wales-sex-assault/
If I had a tenner for every time I've had my kn***rs grabbed playing rugby I'd have enough money to pay for a six nations away day.
Having just watched the video of it, can’t help feel if he gets charged for anything like Sexual assault the world has gone mad. I’m not an expert on the rules of Rugby so can’t comment on what is right or wrong, but it seems to me that he was clearly not doing it maliciously (to cause injury etc). The devils advocate in me also says if you are going to cite someone for grabbing someone then it should be for any part of the body. edit Gareth Thomas had the best quote on it for me , where he said it never happened in my day, if it had I’d still be playing.
Rugby's always had it's slightly, "public school" side to it... https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/s...s/news-story/f15458c7874f3ad0d3c99e3b1b3a2fb5 Apologies for Torygraph link
It has in the past absolutely. Things have changed significantly now though (can't get much more northern working-class than Farrell). Wonder if Jeremy played rugger at prep?
I think working class is stretching it a bit for Owen Farrell. He went to a prestigious boarding school in his teens, for starters.
No he's working class. His schooling doesn't change that (did he go to a grammar school?). What we find with rugby union is that when a promising young player is identified then they are offered the opportunity to attend schools/colleges which have superb facilities and coaching. They come from all backgrounds.
If you reckon the son of Andy Farrell grew up slumming it on some council estate in the north west then fair dos, but we will have to agree to disagree. He was middle class and there's nothing wrong with that.
Andy Farrell middle-class? Seriously.... Owen Farrell, Sam Tomkins, Chris Ashton, Shaun Edwards, Bradley Dwyer, Mike Gregory and plenty more working class boys from this area all attended st John Fisher Catholic High School Wigan. This school clearly excelled at rugby (both codes). If you think Andy Farrell from Wigan was born and raised in a middle-class environment then I'd reckon we only have a 5% working class population in this country.
So by your logic I take it the children of Liam and Noel Gallagher are working class then? Because people from working class backgrounds always raise their kids on the same estates they were brought up on... I'm not taking anything away from Owen Farrell I love the guy but he is not a working class lad. I see working class as families struggling to make ends meet etc. His dad was, but Owen was brought up differently.
I get how you see it but I see it differently. I'm a professional who lives in a nice house in a nice area with a good income: so what. The reality is my mum was raised in new lodge with a father who was a miner. My dad was raised in Bootle with Irish immigrant parents. I am no different to them. I am a working class boy from tarn, it's not about what you have or what you have achieved. Just my opinion.
This has been discussed on the radio this morning. Apparently the 'permanently outraged' have been laying into him on Twitter over his comments. RIP sense of humour.
Am I alone in seeing the irony here, given all the sly moves, intimidation, winding up of opponents and whinging to the referee that are the hallmarks of Alun Wyn Jones' game whenever he's playing England (great player though he is)?
Gareth Thomas - brilliant player in his day and a brilliant role-model for gay men/men who have AIDS - and he has a fine sense of humour!
I can't argue with anything you have said unfortunately the permanently outraged have won the day and Thomas has had to issue an apology.
