So we had given up on the Championship before Struber was appointed?

"At the beginning it was the tenor that we can already plan for league 1".

He's saying it was discussed, which is obvious. Hardly news to anybody.

I'd give him in the benefit of the doubt of the translation on this one

But if that quote is proven to be true then it's disappointing.

Blimey! And here I was thinking they wanted "stability in the Championship"!

Do you expect a coach to take over and not discuss that? Given our position...

Not disappointing to be discussing relegation in November then?

It clearly wasn't discussed with Jose Morais. They sacked him for us getting relegated despite him only having 15 games to turn things round. Struber will have had 30 games plus a transfer window so it seems strange that he wouldn't be treated the same

    Good idea

    Morais:
Brought in midway through Championship season
Brought in when in relegation places
    Opportunity to buy players: zero
    Games to save season: 15

    Struber
Brought in midway through Championship season
Brought in when in relegation places
Opportunity to buy players: January window. Brought in several players from previous club.
    Games to save season: 30

    Good comparison.

One was seemingly told that relegation would mean his sacking, the other was planning for life in league 1 in November

The German is "Zu Beginn war der Tenor, dass wir bereits für die League One planen können."

He means it in the sense of "assumption". For example, I think he means "When I arrived, already the assumption was that we could plan for league 1." He's talking about the feeling in the club before he started. Then in the next sentence, he says that they picked up points, and developed a better team spirit. He means it as a positive, not like it sounds in isolation. I wouldn't worry that he's resigned to failure.

Does he mean the fans or the club though? If the feeling in the club was for league 1 that's just the same isn't it?

It's impossible to say from the words, as you correctly say it could mean either. What he's trying to say is that was an aura of gloom about the place, but he got stuck in, picked up a few points and changed the mindset. Which, if we look back, is more or less what happened.
