Once again a team (Fulham) this time came unstuck at least half a dozen times by trying to tip tap the ball about at the back. Either coaches are stupid or players are, because just like Barnsley they tried to do it constantly, even though Man City were pressing them immediately. Bonkers.
Yerbut, unless you have someone like an Ashley Ward to receive accurately aimed goal kicks etc. from the keeper (ha ha!! as if...) AND hold the ball up to play off to our onrushing forwards the ball simply comes straight back as the opposition always seem to get possession.
I'd say it is. Time after time there are goals given away with defenders messing about on their own 18 yard line. It's hard enough to defend against quality players at the best of times, but presenting them the ball to give them one on one situations is idiotic.
It's the shittest tactic ever, unless you're Moneycheatster City and can buy £50million defenders with your unearned blood money. Everyone else - particularly us - need to boot the fvcking football as far away as possible.
We do not have the players who have sufficient quality to enable us to play that way as often as we do. If Struber is the reason we do it, he needs to change and change quickly.
It’s all about practice & been comfortable doing it. Noting wrong with it if you can do it. You’ll notice it going wrong more on FA cup weekends as a lot of teams are fielding reserves or sides with a few players been rotated. Liverpool first team for example are excellent at it but Adrian, Lovren & Matip had a nightmare with it today.
If you look at Portsmouth third goal it was what used to be called route 1 and unfortunately Sollbauer was out muscled in the penalty area to the ball. The other two were direct ball to back post and our defenders beaten to it whilst goalkeeper routed to spot. We have nobody in opponents half to either hold the ball up or win the header in the area. We had but we sold him , he was called K Moore. Woodrow ,Chaplin are what I would describe as an inside forward . Browny is best on wing as is Thomas but neither can finish. As to Schmidt, well I am not sure what he is yet. He has all the physical presence of a blancmange.
If Carlsberg made playing out from the back, then all opposition players would be on a par with our defenders. We would gift them possession, but they would wildly slice shots or trip up when through on goal. It would be roundly comedic. Problem is they’re mainly far better quality. The championship is littered with good players that will tear you a new arse if given half an invite, yet we keep inviting it. It’s madness.
Coaches are stupid. They tend to be ex footballers. They tend not to have any form of education. That this model still exists is utterly bizarre. They are clearly and demonstrably fc*king thick.
Has anybody ever read any recent coaching manuals, or viewed any coaching websites, or whatever? It's like reading a Haynes manual on how to give a gnat a brain transplant. Utterly, totally incomprehensible. For me, it's simple. At the back, row Z. In midfield, win the ball, then give it to our best player. Up front, just blast it in.
Yet we haven’t conceded too many goals because of it? And other than the drought at the start of the season, our goals for column has been good because we’ve opened teams up through this tactic.

Sound tactic to me. You forgot to add goalkeeper kicks it out of hand and wingers play high ball into centre for someone over 6 feet to head in.
We may not have conceded goals directly from it, but we have made mistakes in almost every single game this season and a lot have cost us goals. The mistakes and our style aren’t mutually exclusive. If you’re suggesting that our style has some benefits based on 5 wins in 29, then you’re scraping the barrel a bit. Our goals column is heavily unbalanced by goals conceded. I have no problem with playing out from the back btw, but only as an option. Not as a basic requirement or a must.
