...So we have a friend whose house we are going to tomorrow night for NYE. She, like us is a gin drinker and thoughtfully bought us a litre bottle of gin for Christmas. She has a sweet tooth and bought us pink Gin (normally plain gin with a few drops of Angostura bitters which turns it pink.
Unfortunately it is pink because it is flavoured with strawberry and rasberry and is sickly and undrinkable in our opinion!! (and apparently in he opinion of many other gin drinkers from what I have read on the internet)

Now do we take it back - knowing she will probably like it - but risk offending her or do I waste it by cleaning the drains?

Save it and turn it into Sloe gin....the Sloes will kill much of the sweetness.

Just be honest. Let her know that you've both given it a try, but it's not to your taste, then ask her if she would like to give it a go. Seems a shame to waste it and at the very least it'll make sure she doesn't buy you it again next year!

Just take it along with you. Someone may want to try it.

would not return it - just pass it on to friend/neighbour and mention to her before next New Year that if she wants to give you something alcoholic you'd like a - whatever.

Thanks all.. I'll probably go with sad brewer's suggestion as we have made sloe gin (a good 'winter warmer') in the past since we collect sloes on a walk to the Abbey near our house and you normally add sugar anyway. The idea of just adding sloes and using the sweetness of the gin may well work. We will have to wait a few months though for the next batch of berries to appear on the bushes although gin keeps indefinitely so no problems.
Also Lidl does an Italian Gin (proper distilled not the Lord Andrew cr*p) seven euros for 50cl and Eurospin do a really good one for 8.99 euros 70cl. 43% Tanqueray is 12.95 euros. The downside is Fever Tree is dearer than the Gin at 5.40 euros for 4 small bottles (Swings and roundabouts)

Amazes me with the low cost of wine and spirits everyone around here are (including us) are not alcoholics. You don't see drunken behaviour albeit the larger towns and cities do have drug problems the same as anywhere else these days.
