Struber: "Mistakes broke our game plan." Interviews Head Coach reflects on Rovers defeat Despite seeing his new team put in an impressive performance on the road, Gerhard Struber admitted he felt frustrated with the result when giving his post-match reaction at Ewood Park. To label their first goal as a mistake is a bit lenient. Nothing to do with being a mistake or indeed the old experience chestnut. It's about not having the ability and skill to play at this level. Absolutely terrible gift of a pass from Anderson. Already questioning the managers thought process when he selects Halme in front of Dougall and keeps Sibbick in a midfield roll when clearly he is purely a CB. Some of his attempts to play the ball into the box were woeful at best. Frustrating to see the quality of our simple passing be so bad in stages. Again nothing to do with the experience buzzword, it's about quality. Blackburn were there for the taking and were very, very poor especially 2nd half and our own lack of quality delivery and poor team selection gifted them all 3 points yesterday. Some of our football was nice again especially after the changes in the 2nd half, but constantly let down by either a stupid pass, poor cross or poor decision. Minimum Shopping list for Jan.. Quality CB (Anderson out of his depth) Quality MF (Can't keep Sibbick in MF) Quality CF (Different to what we have, target man maybe and play Woodrow and Chaplin either side of him) If it's correct that 85% of the TV money arrives in January, every penny of that should be invested in quality not quantity. Maybe take the opportunity to admit some signings not up to task and sell/release to maximise wage budget for increased quality. (Anderson, Green, Wilks, Bahre, Thiam) probably all candidates for the door. Manager will have to be brutal I'm afraid and also change the policy on loans. Pretty sure there could be at least 1 good loan signing who could increase quality. We can defo stay up with some tough decisions made..
Great post, can’t disagree with any of that. Wilks has been the biggest disappointment for me, given his reputation and the fact both us and Hull were after him.
He's frustrated after one game. He ought to think himself lucky that he hasn't been paying to watch this dross since August.
This is the 3rd head coach to have a dabble this season and therein lies some of the problem. Repeat mistakes in tactics/selection are made while they learn the strengths and weaknesses of the squad. There's a lot to be said for not changing a manager mid-season. It sometimes just compounds the problem.
Think the only reason Struber didn’t start with Dougall is because he was late back from the international break and hadn’t had a chance to train with the new manager yet. So instead of throwing a lad in the deep end who wouldn’t know anything about the tactics that would be in play, Struber decided to play someone who did. No doubt in my mind Dougall will start in future when he’s had a few training sessions and a few conversations with the new coaching team.
How many points will we realistically be adrift by January? If these tweaks were to happen right now then maybe, but by January it will be too little too late. Particularly as id be amazed if they bother to change the strategy to get in loans. To my eye, GS is an investment in next season’s league 1 campaign. We will buy a couple more kids with potential with our ‘five percent’ of transfer funds that are left and Con way will hype them up as the saving grace. Then everyone will say the summer transfer window is yet another litmus test of the owners’ intentions.
Very insightful article in the Yorkshire Post. Seems to echo what we fans are saying week in week out. Surely the defenders are told to get shut instead of trying to play their way out of trouble in dangerous areas. ? When will the penny finally drop.? https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/spo...ers-where-barnsley-are-going-wrong-1-10119128
