For the Remainers Who will be the next President of the EU? What system was used to vote in this person? What country will the deputy be from? How many MEP's are there? Which is the ruling party/coalition in the present EU Parliament? Is the ruling party to the Right/Left/Centre? Which country's application to join the EU was recently rejected? Which one country (out of 27) vetoed this application? Is the EU more or less right wing after the recent EU elections? Who chairs the EU committee on Economics? Which two countries are looking to leave the EU in the near future? We Leavers are repeatedly abused on the basis that we 'didn't know what we were voting for' - I wonder how much the Remainers knew about the Organisation they want to stay in? And a final question - if the EU was moving towards adopting a Right wing or nationalistic agenda would that influence your decision to vote Leave or Remain?
So I was having a pint with my mate and I turned to him and said “you know on that BBS, what they’re missing right now are more political threads. Especially after they ironically had a vote on whether to move them to another part of the BBS and then they ignored the results anyway”
I'm perfectly happy with the way the EU operates. It has its foibles, but I'm content with its transparency. I'm perfectly happy to align more. You could of course ask many of the same sorts of questions about our structures, our mechanisms, who sat on various committees and what interests certain MPs have or haven't declared. We could talk of our house of Lords. We could talk of Russian reports, Arron banks, Cambridge Analytica and much much more that is deeply troubling in our own political environment where blatant lies are now acceptable and journalists don't even challenge them. You're right though, the media in our country are extremely guilty of sheltering us from what happens in Brussels and only draws attention when it suits their own agenda to get us out. You only have to see how much coverage our media gives to Trump rather than the EU, and if there hadn't been an out result for the referendum, you'd see even less of the outgoing Tusk and Juncker. The media owners who largely aren't domicile in this country or fully subject to our taxes. When you visit an EU country, there is always more reporting of what is going on, even on BBC world coverage. And of course, you're suggesting the EU has become more right wing.... because of the large number of Brexit Party MEPs turned out thanks to Britain. Of course the largest grouping is the Green/Liberals who had a significant uplift, again, in part due to Britain. I can understand there are people who voted to leave who knew what they were voting for, and I can understand there were people who voted remain who just felt comfortable with the current scenario and don't know a great deal about the EU... having lived in it for however many years, young or old. Just like there are millions who have no clue how parliament works. But you also must accept that there were people who voted to leave for some sinister reasons that any decent person wouldn't want to be associated. Its impossible to quantify that number. But its sadly there, and it doesn't help the debate, nor does it help the very valid reasons of those who voting leave. And what is also obvious is that the form of leaving was never agreed at the point of referendum. We have people wanting no deal, some preferring Mays deal. Some thinking Johnsons deal is better. Some preferring something akin to Canada, some Norway. Some bespoke. Over 3 years later, there is still no consensus as to what leave is or what form of leave has the majority of support. What this whole very sad thing has done is highlighted how divided this country is. I'll be really honest with you... and I'm not proud of this, but this is what we've come to.... if I'm out and about, talking with people in whatever capacity, if someone starts to talk about leaving and are pro that outcome... I gladly walk away. Even take my business elsewhere and not frequent that place. That's the division its caused. the fracture its opened. the resentment that wont be appeased readily. I'm opinionated, I know that, but I'm also reasoned too and think deeply about things. What leave has done is open a chasm that isn't going to heal. I agree that there is too much labelling that all leave voters voted so because of migrants, ignorance and racism... but it was there. I've seen it first hand. I've seen it through videos, interviews, related through others... its there and its ugly nature is becoming less shy. However we leave, whenever we leave, the status quo will remain and still be the entity that has the biggest impact on the inhabitants of this series of islands... while they last. The bitterness will be long endured and the only people who will benefit are the architects.
Who will be the next President of the EU? - Well there isnt one so there wont be a next one as far as I know Did you mean next president the EU council or the next president of the EU Commission or President of the European parliament or something else What system was used to vote in this person? see above What country will the deputy be from? See above How many MEP's are there? 736 Which is the ruling party/coalition in the present EU Parliament Basically a centre left coalition between : European People’s Party, Socialists and Democrats,Renew Europe and the Greens Is the ruling party to the Right/Left/Centre? - centre/left Which country's application to join the EU was recently rejected? I assume you mean Macedonia currently blocked by the French Which one country (out of 27) vetoed this application? Is the EU more or less right wing after the recent EU elections? Not much different Who chairs the EU committee on Economics? No idea and dont care Which two countries are looking to leave the EU in the near future? Do you mean in addition to the UK? I dont know of any We Leavers are repeatedly abused on the basis that we 'didn't know what we were voting for' - I wonder how much the Remainers knew about the Organisation they want to stay in? And a final question - if the EU was moving towards adopting a Right wing or nationalistic agenda would that influence your decision to vote Leave or Remain? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remain though was basically voting to keep the same basic system we already had so most of us had a fair idea what that meant. Did we know exactly - no of course we didnt just as I dont know exactly what will happen no matter who wins the UK election There are many benefits to the UK of being an integral part of the EU, but whenever leavers are asked to give real benefits of leaving the EU and what the future relationship should be there dont seem to have much of a list of benefits and dont seem to agree what the future should be - Even Boris and Farage dont agree
PS to save me typing out all the benefits here is a little list of some of the benefits we get as part of the EU I cant find an equivalent on the benefits of leaving beyond blue passports and ...er
In the UK our current prime minister was chosen because one party, the Tories voted him as leader. In the European commission ALL mep's vote not just the ruling party. Which one is more democratic?
The thing is I now have a much better understanding of the EU and its effects than I did at the time of the referendum and its clear that leaving is really difficult to do without trashing the country - it is possible and several people I respect the views of have outlined ways we could separate over a period of several years and move to a different model of working with the EU. The thing is they are far removed from the "Get Brexit Done" rubbish that we are being pedalled Maybe red Taff can explain exactly what relationship he thinks we should have with Europe and how we get there with minimal pain - oh and the benefits of doing that
As I'm not truly altruistic (and there's too many selfish people for that to work with)... I'll carry on asserting that the money we pay to the EU comes back multiplied in trade, indeed the simple act of voting to leave has lost the UK economy more than the amount we pay to the EU. When we do leave - that will be multiplied 10 fold (at least). In simple % terms - our contribution to the EU is 0.5% of GDP, as we all know even a small recession will wipe 5% off GDP, so that's 10x the amount we pay to the EU. The worst case scenario could see GDP shrink by double figures. And no one can quantify what this will bring us.
I know very little about cars, but mine gets me from A to B and I'm happy with it. I take it to experts and they make sure it's ok every year. If it needs work doing on it then I might do a bit of research and make a decision that works best for me and my financial situation. I don't need to know the full ins and outs of it if it is working fine
I'm waiting for the OP to give the correct answers. We Remainers are continually being asked these questions and I'm waiting to see if they have remembered the answers. Unfortunately there never seems to be any answers to remember when the "what are the benefits of leaving?" question is asked
I'm not massively in to the EU but I do know it's not done me any harm and it helped our town out significantly in the 90s through objective one. It also helped to safeguard workers rights. It has also subsidised many of our industries. Don't know much about it apart from those trivialities I'm afraid.
Less bloody foreigners. The come over here taking our jobs by applying for them while I don't bother. It's an outrage. Alternatively leaving will stop the Tories from favouring London over the north. Nobody seems to know how that will happen but it will. It just will.
