We're shooting ourselves in the foot by conceeding sloppy goals, this time from two set pieces. Cavare then Dougall lose their man and we're two down in a game where we were the only team creating chances in open play. Yet again, we're playing a team from the upper echelons of the division, creating chances, getting the opposition on the back foot and making the opposition look somewhat ordinary (ala Swansea & WBA). Yet we're still not finishing the chances, thus our continuing slack play at the back (usually from individual errors) presents our opponents with a way back into the match. Last night, we could and should have been clear in front before City scored through Wilks twice, Chaplin & Mowatt. At least we didn't capitulate after the second goal went in. Neither did we resort to hit and hope with the equaliser. An excellent passage of play from Thomas, Sibbick, Simoes & Schmidt finished with Woodrow scoring a sniffer -Allan Clarke type- goal, similar to his one against Derby. Indicative of a good goalscorer. We're now desperate for a win, though. Until we start getting a few on board, we're not climbing out of the bottom three. However, no one can claim these young lads aren't giving 100% for the cause. A big game next Saturday and I believe this team will be up for it.
Watched the game back today and the second goal begs the question of why don't we have anyone on the post. Basic stuff really. Cavare stands on his post and he heads the ball away.
Agreed. If we must use zonal marking when defending corners, at least put someone on each post, to give us half a chance if the marking fails.
I thought that at the time as soon as I saw the replay. - Fortunately for us Bristol didnt have anyone on the post when Halme scored either
They werent - had a good chuckle at their forum this morning - could almost have been on here for all the wailing and gnashing of teeth Some even suggesting they sack the little guy as they should be beating teams like.... Some almost identical to posts on here when we "threw away" a 2 goal lead at WBA
Ultimately we can play as well as we want to in open play but unless we improve drastically in both boxes we’re going down. A great example is Cardiff from two seasons ago, really poor side in open play, one of the worst in the league but they went up automatically because they defended superbly & took their chances well particularly from set pieces
I'm not blind to the team's failings, as stated in my post. But I'm not going to conveniently ignore what I perceive to be positives, either.
this also prevents the 1st goal at West Brom, when instead of being stood on the post heading the ball away, Diaby is running towards the ball and therefore our own goal and heads it in. Crazy.
Sorry, mate. Having re read my initial reply to you, it comes across as somewhat unfriendly, ignorant and nasty. I apologise.
if you dont stop talking sense and bringing positivity to the board then i'm afraid to say its the naughty step for you young fella my lad. . . and no wine. . . . think on !
The two goals conceded last night were down to zonal marking. Even experienced defenders have difficulty with the system. It borders on suicidal expecting raw inexperienced players to do it . Man for man is simple and you match up like for like. Defenders know exactly what their job is.
I know, I know. I'm always chucking my weight about. Playing the hard man, when in reality I'm a big, soft teddy bear.
why wouldn't you do that? Even playing as amateurs we had someone on the posts and marked man for man. Lots of organising to make sure everyone had a player, you certainly knew who was at fault if your man nicked a yard and got in an effort. This zonal marking sort of makes it so the whole defence takes joint responsibility, yet we can see who's at fault for each goal. Let's take Cavare as an example. It might wake him up if he's given a kick up the arse by his team mates for every time he arrives late at the scene. He was in no man's land for their second goal and watched the first.
Clubs don't now for some reason - as a full back we had it drilled into us to defend the post until the ball was cleared
No not at all, there were promising signs in open play I agree we’ve just got to be more clinical in both boxes
