Why the foook are we talking about the car park !?!?! As someone has said - what other club has a car park as big as this. It’s only used by the flask and blankie brigade anyway FFS !!! Clearly this car park would be more beneficial to the club if accommodation was built on there for the young players and staff. So NO - I’m not talking about the bleeding car park - I’m asking whether there were incidents in the town - after all these road closures, bus diversions, useless bridges etc etc etc !?!?!
Fair enough. I didn't put his name in the thread though, you did. Can I ask, result aside, what was so bad about your matchday experience today, that you expect the club to do something about?
That car park could be the only way some fans are able attend the match. My dad couldn’t have attended in the last few years he watched them had it not been for the car park.
Judging by the number of police vans done from Durham police there should be no excuse for any trouble. Nothing to see when I left the ground at full time.
I’ll bet my bottom dollar these guys were from Barnsley. I know I have banged on about the number of Wednesday, Sheff United and Leeds fans in the Barnsley District - and what you are describing here is an example of it. But Unbelievably I still get replies saying there are NO or only a few Wednesday, Sheff United and Leeds fans in the Barnsley District. I’m saying there are literally THOUSANDS.
It's people coming early and parking at the edges of the car park in order to get away first apparently.
The fact that all users of the car park in the vicinity where I parked (bottom corner - near Exit B, I believe) were sat in their cars for over an hour with no movement. As an example of what can be achieved with reasonable negotiation, if you attend York Races and use the main car park there are traffic control measures in place after racing to facilitate a smooth and orderly exit back into York, or in the direction of the M62. These measures apply even on the first day's flat racing of the year, when the attendance will typically be in the region of 8,000 - roughly half the attendance at Oakwell today. As Barnsley MBC are effectively partners in the ownership of Oakwell I cannot see why, in this day and age it is beyond the club to speak with the Council and SYP to facilitate better arrangements. If you totally disagree with that then fine - everyone has to form their own view.
I don't disagree at all. However, I do think that the club was scuppered today by the additional traffic problems and road closures today. I never park at Oakwell because I am able to walk to e.g. Courthouse or the Station which makes for an easier exit after the game. I sympathise with people who have mobility issues which means that they need to park closer to the ground. That could be me one day. Not sure what can be done in those circumstances. However, the issues today were predictable, and we had reasonable warning. I made different arrangements, as did most of the people I know. As far as I can see there was only one route out of the Oakwell car park today, directing cars to a roundabout that had roadworks (Cundy Cross). We were warned. ALot of the fans in the post match fan zone were happily watching TV/ having a beer/ coffee etc, whilst the traffic dispersed. That wasn't an option last season, so the matchday experience was enhanced for those fans who may have otherwise been caught up in the traffic?
Bit of trouble under flyover at harborough hill, old lady knocked to ground as it happened, bumped her head on floor as she fell but was up on her feet after a couple of mins.
Aye the fan zone has taken up car parking spaces but not only that more and more cars are on the road nowadays and travelling at a snails pace seems to be the norm. Britain is becoming gridlocked.
I don’t know, perhaps they just don’t attend. My dad couldn’t have attended for as long as he did had it not for being able to park fairly close to the Turnstiles.
Probably the case, guy I know at work about 64 had one of those car parking spaces that were lost to the fan zone. He sadly just decided to give up his season ticket once he was told he would lose his parking.
To be fair that wasn’t the case for my dad as he had already stopped going before that. It was just that his mobility became less and less and climbing the stairs from the concourse to his seat simply became too much. Then there was the cold winter days/ nights.
I don't think it was the only factor in his decision either, just the one that pushed him to it I think. As you say the winter months can be quite harsh for some
