If you’ve only got one leg and you don’t agree with death penalty does that make you a goody one shoe

 

I cant understand how anyone can lie for their lover in circumstances like these.That poor child.

I've always said the death penalty should be brought back.
If it's 100% proven or the person owns up to killing someone then they hang full stop.
If a jury finds the person guilty by majority vote then it's life and I mean life.
In addition if you kill a member of the armed services or emergency services like the policeman who died recently then you hang and assulting them a minimum of 10 years.
Found carrying a knife an instant 10 years and unless you are licensed then found carrying a gun then it's 25 years. There is no need to a carry a weapon.
A bit harsh but I can't think of how we can tackle dangerous crime and make society safer.

 

IMO people can say what they like but I would ABSOLUTELY HATE being locked up you can have 3 meals a day, teles, computers, phones, drugs or whatever but you DON'T have the freedom to go out when you fancy. To watch the Red's, meet friends and family etc. So as much as i would love to see some crimes fit the death penalty being locked up they must suffer in some ways.

 

Japan has the death penalty - very low crime rates.

The USA has the death penalty (though very inconsistently applied) - high rates of violent crime for the developed world.

Scandinavia has no death penalty - violent crime rates are very low.

It seems pretty obvious to me that whatever your opinion on the death penalty or other draconian punishments, there is absolutely no correlation between them and a reduction in crime. Other factors are clearly at play here.

 

How do you determine if it's "100% proven"? Also false confessions occur more than you'd think.

So if I absent mindedly left a knife in my bag/pocket and was searched you'd give me 10 years?

I think this idea that prison is a holiday camp is a bit far fetched. Why was Hindley so desperate to get out of prison despite the very obvious risks to her life if she ever did?
Putting another human being to death when it isn't heat of the moment or self defence just isnt something I can get my head round I'm afraid.

I agree. I think it's the deprivation of liberty itself which is most punitive rather than the conditions. If you're in prison for life I doubt it makes much difference after the first year or so whether you're in a standard prison cell or a vip suite at the Ritz, it's more the fact that you can't get out or live on your own terms

 

A couple of days ago I found a knife on the street whilst taking my dog for a walk (a rescued Staffy) - I could quite easily have been stopped by the police and found to be carrying - that's 10 years for me!

This just about sums up why such draconian penalties are unwarranted.

The country as a whole needs educating regards violence in society - that's how we deal with dangerous crime - prevention is better than any cure, always was, always will be.

There is no need for violence against anyone. I would, given the chance make Boxing illegal - there I've said it (cue mass hysteria from people owning dogs called Tyson)

 

Every innocent prisoner hanged was found 100% proven guilty at the time .

 

I wonder how those of us who are opposed to the death penalty would respond were we jurors on a murder trial where the defendant would hang if found guilty?
If we thought the person guilty as a point of principle would we find the person 'not guilty' and see that person set free?

 

No as a juror you are their to determine guilt or not , the Judge determines sentence

 

No if I thought he/she were guilty then I would vote that way on jury duty.

 

Tbh your post and DTs post illustrate why our Democracy is designed in the way it is ,
The fact we elect an MP to make decisions and laws for us in a sensible fashion rather than the Lynch mob mentality and knee jerk reactions .
Whilst most people agree that some of the sentences should be tighter and in cases harsher most people would agree that state sponsored murder is not an option we should even consider.
You state you can’t think of how we should tackle crime well that’s why we appoint people who are dedicated to these problems .
Nothing’s perfect but the populists pick on the small per cent of injustices to push their far more sinister agendas.

Of course. But we're all human. Knowing your decision could lead to the death of another human, no matter how reprehensible their crimes, is bound to influence your behaviour. Even if you've made a conscious decision not to let it, your subconscious is likely to be working overtime.

 

Possibly , you’d expect the threshold of proof for a guilty verdict to increase
