No, I'm white. But black people have said that they're offended by it so I'm saying that we are in no position to overrule them. And singing songs based on racial stereotypes that black people find offensive is really ******* backwards and makes us look ****

I’m white and have a massive lovely personk. When I told my doctor about it he said “ What are you telling me for?” I replied “I’m telling every f****r!!”

It's so disappointing to read this board at times. As I've stated before my brother in law is black and some of the stuff he's had to endure from fellow fans following the Reds is disgusting.

Add this to the list.

Add the fact that if a black man comes forward and says he has an issue about a song like this, he is immediately told to be quiet and stop being daft because it's a "compliment".

I would hope that this chant doesn't catch on.

A similar song was sung about Darren Moore at Oakwell. Can't remember anyone ever having a problem then. Funny how things can change in just ten years.

 

You do realise that the whole ‘offended on behalf of’ is just right another way of saying ‘political correctness gone mad’. It’s stupid and lazy! If the only defence you have is ‘it’s not aimed at you so you have no right to object’ then you’re a moron.

Would you not defend someone being bullied or physically attacked under any circumstances? Where’s the line? Your kids? your mates? Only people you know? The same ethnicity/ gender/ sexuality?

A racial stereotype is never ‘complimentary’ never ‘harmless’ so let’s grow up and move into the 21st century.

 

When I worked in China for a year I had constant jokes aimed at me and my girlfriend of the time about mail order brides and chinese take aways... I see similar comments have been made in the Bale thread too. It seems that making fun of certain races is totally unacceptable yet others are fair game for some reason. It is disgusting and like being back in the 80s.

 

I saw a comment yesterday on twitter about the matter and one guy actually suggested that white people cannot be racially abused. Your experience in China suggests differently. I have also been a target of racial abuse when visiting a different country.

 

The comments arose when she came back and lived over here for 3 years. The abuse was not overt in their eyes nor was it intended to cause offence but it did. One group of lads in Middlesbrough pushed a burger into her face once. The abuse was at her via me. I believe anyone can be racially abused but luckily for us we are far less likely to receive any.

The way people speak about Chinese in my experience is extremely patronising. Same boring comments about take aways etc as though that's all their country is about.

When it comes to being judged for taking sides; I'd rather be defending the abused than the abuser - you feel free to make your own choices and sneer though.

Been watching this thread with interest, some valid comments from contributors.
I don't personally think the song is MEANT to be insulting especially to one of your own players, but I do feel that the singers have limited intellectual capability to understand that it can be offensive. It's a perpetuation of stereotyping which the target may not be appreciative of.
In the same way we should also stop singing about Bobby Hassell which is insulting to ginger haired people, and not least to Bobby himself as it implies that he would indulge in infidelity with a variety of fan's partners.
Similarly we need to be very careful at accusing all Nottingham Forest fans of being Scabs, patently most of them are not but we tar them all with the same brush. I'm sure I wouldn't be happy being accused of strike breaking, disloyalty, and oath breaking, and betrayal of my fellow workers if I had done no such thing.
The way Lee Johnson was villified on here and described as a poison dwarf amongst other things, is very insulting to those born with that unfortunate condition.
We stereotype all the Donny fans as Pikeys yet there is no sign of dissent on the forum when that word is used.
I also haven't seen any condemnation of the Leeds Scum chants on here, is this collective amnesia? Or are they REALLY all scum?
Lastly I think it most inappropriate that we label all Sheffield Utd and Wednesday fans as people with speech impediments and continually chant this at them during a game.
Mind you we are all viewed as incestuous six fingered dullards by the fans of other teams around us, though this shouldn't make everything else justifiable.

I’ve always thought the argument that you can’t be ‘offended on someone’s behalf’ is ridiculous. Expecting the person being victimised to be the only person allowed to say anything just means that the ones doing the victimising are more likely to get away with it. It’s just a way of telling people to stand by and do nothing, to ‘keep their noses out’ of you will. Well no, I’m not just going to watch someone being bullied and if I think something is wrong then I will call people out on it. I’m unlikely to face abuse because of my race but if I was somewhere with people shouting offensive stuff at me I’d want someone to be ‘offended on my behalf’ and stick up for me. I know it’d be very hard to do it myself in that situation. There’s also the problem that those doing the victimising don’t respect their victim so them saying ‘I’m offended by that, please stop’ would just result in laughter and a probable increase in the behaviour. The people doing it needs someone they don’t already look down on to tell them it is wrong before they’ll listen.

My take is I don’t personally see it as racist, I see it as a stereotype in the same way that another poster described people from Japan all been intelligent or making out all Scots are ginger & burn easily or Yorkshire men are tight etc.

But having said that because some people do see it as racist I wouldn’t sing it & I don’t think others should either.

It’s just common sense really. I swear when I’m at home or with mates but with my mum & in years before my grandparents I wouldn’t swear around them as I’d offend them by doing so.

In the same way you & your mates might think the Diaby chant is funny but when you go in to Oakwell & start singing it you’re running the risk of offending him as well as other black players & fans.
