It's nothing to do with who closed more pits. The Tories virtually shut down the whole industry to limit union control and then imported our coal from Poland and Columbia.
The Scots would be entitled imo if the Tories tried to take them out of the EU when as a country they voted remain don’t you think ? Yes we were asked whether we wanted to remain or leave in a non binary vote but ask yourself which is more democratic asking the people if they are sure in a binary vote and going through with whatever they vote or saying no that’s it doesn’t matter what you want now we’re leaving whether you like it or not ? You either believe in democracy in its truest sense or in the sneaky car salesman’s democracy where he says I e got you to sign and there no going back.
The detail can be found in the voting figures, both at the general election and in the referendum. So many labour voters, and so many brexiteers.
The Scots took part in a national referendum quite willingly and should accept the result. Democracy again. If they want another vote on independence (another lot wanting another ballot till they get the right result) then there are procedures to go through. Though I seem to remember the Scots vote was a once-in-a-generation vote. Obviously democratic decisions aren't meant to mean anything much these days.
Not disagreeing. So we leave. As per the vote. If at sometime in the future there's a successful vote to rejoin, then fair enough. I am neither a full on remainer or brexiteer. Simply a democrat.
I shall try to make it more straight forward, where in my initial post did I mention anything regarding the EU referendum. Where in any following posts did I say which way I voted in the EU referendum. I shall repeat the bullet points of my post/opinion, which were pointed towards the opening post! Barnsley is a Labour stronghold (get over it) and the views expressed on a Barnsley FC fans forum will probably reflect that.
Well you say willingly but I don’t think they had any say whether to or not it was a Tory Govt decision to hold a referendum . But besides of which they voted to stay so democracy should prevail . Nobodies suggesting to hold referendums till the right result comes in as far as I can see It’s just a sound bite from hardline Brexiteers . What people are saying as far as I can see is to hold a Binary referendum which the other wasn’t now that it’s more clear what a Brexit or Remain looks like. You questioned whether the poster believed in democracy because he wanted a definition of the leave decision but I’m saying what’s wrong with that it’s the same people voting choose how many times they vote . If Farage had lost the vote on the same margins he’d do exactly the same but it’d still be democracy if the same people are voting .
Well you may be right about the Scots having to suffer a Brexit vote rather than wanting one. And you are within your rights to ask for another clarifying vote. I just don't agree with that, cos we have had an unequivocal vote. And the fact that Nige would have asked for a re-run only underlines my view that the one vote we had should be full and final. Otherwise anybody can come up with any old excuse for not accepting the first vote, and it all just drags on.
Well it does drag on your right about that and imo there’s only one way to solve it , politicians can’t /won’t. the media is almost warmongering on our fellow EU partners and it festers on and on .
I think that it's best to consider that we should never been given a choice in the first place. Everyone, apart from a few right wing self interested idealogues with absolutely nothing to lose, would have lived well enough without a vote.
The 2016 referendum is the least democratic UK vote I’ve ever seen. If you want to call something democratic because it suits you when it clearly isn’t... well, fair enough.
Agree with this, IMO a lot of societies ills are as a direct consequence of what happened in the 80’s. Genuine question for the people who really hate Thatcher, if she had shut mines down in a controlled manner with a plan to replace the industry in each area, would she have been so hated?
IMO She would have been at the time and for some the hatred would still have been there . But the way the Govt abandoned industrial areas because it wasn’t just coal mines and the consequences still being felt to this day. I’m not sure whether the hatred would have been milder but I don’t think it would have transgendered the generations as much imo.
