I disagree with that. We've played attractive football and got a strong team mentality. Play offs are a lottery No way is that a failure.
I would put him in top 5 of my time watching the reds (25 years or so) in terms of quality, but I put him number 1 in terms of my favourite manager. I love the guy. He just exudes passion for the game and his team.
What advantages? He took over a side just relegated young players low on confidence. Had to implement a new style of football on the group, has had players sold Bradshaw,Potts, moncur and plenty of injurys to key players throughout. Some of his best players are ones other managers had given up on mowatt, mcgeehan, pinnock, cavare. You have gone on record as saying none of these players would get in the play off winning side in your opinion. So stendel is getting the best out of these lads. When we were here last time under Wilson we had one of the biggest budgets and that football was the worst I've seen in 20 years and people were miffed when he was sacked 6 points off relegation and without a away win in 4 months. If Daniel stendels name was danny Wilson or Paul heckingbottom diffrent story.
We have the 2nd biggest budget in the league. When we were in the Chanpionship we assembled a very good League 1 side. We have spent over 5 million quid on players against teams like Shrewsbury made up of free transfers. Some weeks we have had players on our bench that cost more than the entire opposition team put together. When we got relegated I said that given all the above anything over than promotion automatically would be a failure. Nothing I’ve seen has changed my mind. I like Stendhal and think he has produced an entertaining team but We are not plucky underdogs we are big hitters in this league with the most expensive squad we have ever assembled (outside the Premiership). We have 5 of the best players in the League as per PFA team of the year as well as Woodrow and Brown. So yeah anything other than promotion has to be seen as below expectations Not sure what Heckingbottom or mark 2 Wilson have to do with owt neither would be anywhere near my Top 5 managers though of course Mark 1 Wilson alongside Clarke is probably the best. The type of people who big up Stendhal are just the tripe to turn on him if we go up and get battered every week
For me : 1. Danny Wilson 1st time 2. Hunter 3. Clarke 4. Bassett 5. Hecky If we get automatic promotion I'd put him challening for 5th. He'd need to do ok next season in the Championship to secure that position.
I missed Clarke and Hunter eras but Danny Wilson’s era was sprinkled with magic. May have been my age, I dunno but what he achieved seemed magical to me.
I’d imagine he was tasked by the board in getting us promoted. If he fails to do that even if it is a heroic failure it’s still a failure.
Point of the post wasn't to have a go at Cryne again! Interesting how many of those good managers are still in employment! Hecky and Johnson .... anyone else?
I expected given the money we spent in the championship on a brilliant L1 team that we wound get promoted. We have subs that cost more than the oppositions entire team. Bookies 2nd favourites. 5 players in PFA team of the year. So yeah a failure albeit a glorious one. There is no nearly succeeding just either doing so or failing.
. They aren't his players though he inherited a expensive failed side low on confidence. I thought we would do okay if I'm honest but didn't think we would be automatic promotion candidates. 5 of the best players in the league? Well last season mowatt was at Oxford struggling in league one. Mcgeehan struggled to get in the scunny side on loan. Pinnock was our 4th choice center back behind McDonald Jackson and Lindsay.and Cavare was behind jason McCarthy even Adam Davies got dropped by hecky and jose. Interesting you mention Jacob brown when Potts left I wondered where the goals and assists would come from the easy option would have been hedges to replace Potts. But stendel has brought him on leaps and bounds in a position he wasn't used to before this season. Because Wilson mk2 had a similar budget one of the biggest in league one then with big earners, when Wilson mk2 was sacked the football was diabolical Donny away,Crawley at home, Chester at home in the f.a cup just 3 mind numbing games off the top of my head and people on here including yourself were still saying he should have had more time he would have turned it round ect. Some would have watched hecky spiral us down the football league singing "He is one of our own" but stendel gives us the best points total for God knows how long which would usually see you promoted any other season. We have kept the most clean sheets in all 4 leagues and played some of the best football since the 1st Wilson but seems the knives are getting sharpened already.
One of the bests seasons I've ever seen at oakwell remember hammering Blackburn with half the squad theyd won the premier with and hignetts last minute winner against Walsall am sure it was for his hat trick great memories
Can’t help thinking you aren’t comparing like for like situations. To strengthen your point you’d be better off comparing Lee Johnson coming in & taking over a group of young players who’d had a season playing together to Stendel coming in & taking over a group of young players who’d had a season playing together as it puts Stendel in a much better light as he outperformed Johnson in very similar circumstances. Where as the circumstances Stendel has found himself in don’t have anything in common with the situation Wilson found himself in
You seem obsessed by Wilson. When we got relegated we were left with 5 players if you want to be more truthful and didn’t have a squad that had cost 5 million plus to assemble we had one one that was mainly free transfers with a couple of 250 grand signings. As I said I don’t know why the obsession. Those days are done. Anyone who knows owt about football knew the squad we had assembled was a very powerful L1 team as we had basically signed the best players outside the Championship. It wasn’t and probably won’t be good enough for the championship but that’s whole different matter. As I said many on this thread bigging the manager up will be the first slagging him off. I remember a thread saying hecky was our best ever manager and then the ones who jumped on the bandwagon then were the first to slag him off. It was ever thus I like Danny and hope he is successful. Not getting promoted won’t be success.
Yes definitely. I know a lot dislike Wilson for leaving us for Wednesday but I think it’s only fair that people accept he had a very difficult job here 2nd time round. 14 debuts (& that’s professional debuts not Barnsley debuts), a pre-season training camp with just 3 senior pros in the summer which were Jennings, Nyatanga & M’Voto with the only other senior pro, Cranie left behind as we wanted to get his wages off the books. Jennings with a pretty much career ending knee injury, Treacy with pretty much career ending depression. On top of that losing 5 first teamers in Winnall, Williams, Bree, Cranie & Ramage all within a short space of time for several months. No doubt the football wasn’t great & Wilson wasn’t perfect, he messed up with the Lita signing for example but I don’t think he can be blamed for most of the other issues that season. I hope Stendel & no other future Barnsley managers have to deal with that many problems in one season.
The players we brought in back then were on decent wages lita,Turnbull, treacy Conor was 300k and winnall 250k. In your opinion and a few others it was a good league one team and isgrove and hedges would be standout players..... Others said we would struggle and had a team full of failures. I like how stendel sets the team up and the football we have played. If he were to go Woodrow uptop and 5 in midfield hoofing aimless balls from defence to him changing the squad every week I would turn on him yes. We will have to agree to disagree but if we have a big points total but miss out on automatic to Sunderland or pompey 2 bigger clubs and then miss out in the play offs I'd be disappointed but I would like to see him given another season as it's not all black and white as he's failed next. You completely ignore the fact that the 5 players named in the teams of the season 4 were out of favour last season and even Davies got dropped by both managers for Townsend.
Too early. He inherited a group of players who had potential, but needed more time together and less quality of opposition to boost the confidence levels (which is why Morais was brought in, to help instil confidence and belief into a relatively reasonable squad - albeit the rest of his management skills had been overlooked, I can see reason as to why he was appointed). The quality of our squad for League 1 is strong, so in some regards, it might have been harder to mess it up. He’s not coached anything from scratch yet. But, he’s done well so far this season and has us playing good football. If we do get promoted, next season is the biggest test. Heckingbottom was similar. He inherited Lee Johnston’s team and form and did well to keep it rolling for 2 seasons. But after that, when he head to start from scratch, it was a struggle (although I think most would have found it a struggle too).
