. I know they won the title a few times back in the 50's but other than a 1997 cup win, they've done nothing of note for generations. The last few years has seen something of a renaissance. I don't get it. They're above Monaco and Marseille.
It was the previous regime who took them to 4th and they improved to 3rd in New City Capital's first season. They have since slipped outside of European qualification and the fans blame it on the huge player trading profits being made. This season they have spent €28 million on players and received €61.7 million. Edit: Not making a single winter transfer signing won't have helped either.
You don’t have to ‘get it’. As you’re not a fan of that particular club how could you know what the Fans think. It’s not for us or anyone else to make an uninformed judgement on the ‘behaviour of other Clubs supporters. I know i’d be ‘a bit pissy if fans of St Etienne said “what’s up with those whinging Barnsley Fans. They are already punching above their weight at the top of the third tier. Who do they think they are. Small town club who achieved little in over a hundred years in a shitty Northern town with crap weather.!! They should be grateful for what they’ve got.”
Just signed up to their forum, need admin to activate account though. Will have to brush up on my ***** French but be interesting to see what they have to say to a Barnsley fan. Anticipating a low level of abuse
I’ve made no judgments. I’m putting it out there that this current period is the best in their existence since the 1950s. Yet whinge they do. Someone on here had it bang on earlier regards BFC. That if we are promoted, there’ll be no well done or celebration by some of our fans. They’ll quickly move on to knocking the promoted players by saying they aren’t good enough for the next division. Some folk can’t see the wood for the trees.
Yes, but some of us are from the Patrick Cryne and Keith Hill generation, with expectations successfully lowered by owners and managers who came to our football club after 2000 and don’t properly understand or appreciate our traditions and successes. On the other hand, some of us have been around longer. Some of us have sensible expectations and know this football club’s place in the overall scheme of things. Some of us spent 25 of the last 35 years watching this team comfortably existing at second tier level. Some of us know that we are the longest tenured Championship club in Britain and see that as an absolute minimum expectation. Some folk, on the other hand, have very low standards and will settle for any old rubbish. Some folk will take ‘operating expenses ‘ as a handwavy bulls.hit explanation for player fire sales that release millions of pounds. It’s a trait too commonly held by Barnsley people in my opinion.
We've had ONE season in the top flight in 130 odd years and ONE Cup win over 100 years ago. Other than that we've oscillated between the 2nd and 3rd tiers with a few years in the fourth. We've spent more seasons in the 2nd than anyone else. In that time we've rarely threatened to go higher. It's a record I'm proud of and there's no reason not to aim higher but I'm sick to death of people being called crap supporters for actually being in touch with reality. Unless our owners can somehow increase revenue streams above the progress of similar sized clubs to ourselves or they throw a huge amount of money at the playing staff we are likely to remain what we always have been. Moan and snipe and get them out if you don't like them, I'm not sure of their intentions myself, but, as I said on another thread, be very careful what you wish for because you might not fancy the alternative either.
NOt really been following this but I thought GG only joined them at the start of this month. Have I missed something since they are blaming him for all their current problems?
Yeah you can't blame them for wanting to know where their tens of millions have gone to in the difference between ins and outs. They had built a good team doing the best they have done in ages and now Viera has had it sold from under him and so instead of building on it and challenging for a league, they will now be lucky if they make the champions league again next season.
I think you’ve illustrated my point there. You (we) have no idea whether the ‘whinging’ from their fans is justified or not so we should be careful about commenting from afar. You are on much safer territory having at pop at your own fans because at least that view is based on some knowledge and experience. Whether it’s wise or fair to make those comments, particularly bearing in mind you’re criticising Barnsley fans ‘in advance’ is a moot point.
To suggest that some fans will put up with anything is just daft mate. I'm not of the Keith Hill generation. I go back to Allan Clarke, so I've seen us in every division. I'd love to see us back in the prem, or at least a regular championship club, but I've enjoyed some of the football wherever we've been. Just because some fans don't constantly want to criticise the club for whatever reason, don't ever think they're easily pleased. It's just that they see the it as a waste of energy. It never changes anything. Some of ones that qualify their constant criticism of everything the club does by saying it's because they have high expectations, could add weight to their argument by giving praise when it's due, but instead they just keep quiet.
