I think it's 30 years this week since those two fantastic cup ties with Stoke, and Cooper's somersault. I'm feeling distinctly middle aged thinking about it. Bloody loved Cooper.
Me neither. I thought we had the white rose badge at that time, after the Well/Oakleaf one a few years previously. BBC choice maybe?
I bloody loved Cooper too. On thie opening goalscorer, I always found it sad that (Ooh Gerry) Gerry strongly associates himself with Leicester rather than Barnsley, despite playing almost twice as many games for us.
Still well up when I think i think of Steve. Got to know him a fair bit when he played for us and kept in touch afterwards on his travels. A sad loss.
Always found it a sad irony that a head injury did for him given where he put his head when playing. He was fearless. With all respect to Saville and Rammell, I still scratch my head to this day as to why Machin sold him, I thought we were better with him in the side.
I loved him my first proper hero. I was gutted when Machin sold him I can only think he just didn't get on with him.
Think someone did a diving header on Saturday. ( summat brought it to mind ) and I said to my brother you don’t see diving headers in the norm. Nowadays. We then tried to think when the art dried out. I think this thread answers that. Steve Cooper. The man who started the somersault celebration that was wrongly attributed to Peter Beagrie.
my hero when I was younger. I’ve only ever had a number on a Barnsley shirt once, even though numbers weren’t attributed to specific players back then I had an 8 put on the back at Sugg Sports for Steve Cooper.
He used to train with a belt around his waste which had sand bags attached to it. He felt it made him feel lighter and helped him to jump higher in games. He was a complete mentalist but a lovely bloke who gave his all. He could be a right dirty ******* at times as well.
