This is the way I hoped it might go:
    • Player A bought from non-league for 100k
    • 2 years of development
    • Player A sold to Championship side for 2m
    • Player B bought with 1m of proceeds
    • Year or two of development
    • Player B sold for >3m profit
    • Rinse & repeat, gradually improving the quality of those coming in and climbing the table
How I'm afraid it's going to go:
    • Player A bought from non-league for 100k
    • 2 years of development
    • Player A sold to Championship side for 2m
    • 1.9m taken out of club kitty and paid to directors
    • Player B bought from non-league for 100k
    • Stagnation forever but churning a profit for the investors
Am I being paranoid or sensibly concerned?

    It's the way I fear.

I did hope for the same.

Not able to say one way or another as it stands as we have signed a couple that seems to break that mould but jury is out for me.

As the saying goes. The proof is in the pudding or summat.

    But I'm watching

That's not only the way it appears but the way I fear it was always designed to be.

There has to be a reason that those in charge made no plans for promotion last time round and that both ownerships were only too happy to see us relegated rather than make signing to keep us up.
Cheaper in league 1 so can keep shopping at the lowest level

It certainly looks like the blueprint works best in League One. This won't have escaped the owners, who may think a yo-yo club between tiers 2 and 3 is preferable for their level of investment/business model. The sort of players we unearth can excel in the 3rd tier and raise their stock with a promotion, before being sold for a big profit in the 2nd tier. The weakened team with raw replacements gets relegated. Rinse and repeat.

You are spot on gravychips. Even the most moronic of fans can understand the owners are here to make a profit this issue for me is when the reinvestment into the team isn’t proportionate to the players being sold. Think it speaks volumes our record signing was over 20 years ago

There is absolutely NO doubt the owners are here to make a profit. They have no long cherished fondness for a club in a small town in northern England. We're not their "pet project". If we were they wouldn't already own Nice and be looking for a club to buy in Spain.
Our best hope is that they feel that the higher the club rises the bigger the profits available.
They could choose to be selling Pinnock for £6 million in Tier 3 or have us in the Prem and selling a version of Pinnock for £60 million.

Agree, they’ve not bought us to make a million every couple of years on a player, real money is higher up the tree, they can also get a lot more money for sponsorships/TV rights etc the higher we are.

But what owners of any business are not there to make a profit? I get really confused why this is sometimes used as a slur towards business owners when it comes to football.

If I ended up with the cash to buy Barnsley Football Club my sole intention would be to make a profit. Any other approach would be absolutely barmy.

We survived for over a hundred years without a single person taking a single penny out of the club.

If I had the cash to buy bfc my sole intention would be to make them successful. I'd make sure the books balanced (or try to, I'm not claiming any expertise here) but I wouldn't take any money from the club.

Likewise - it is a community asset, not a vehicle to make profit. If I wanted to use my money to make a profit I most certainly would not buy a football club.

I think we are in the "sweet spot" for making money. In div 1 it is possible to bring cheap ambitious young players in, improve them and sell them on. If we were in the championship it’s too much of a jump for them same lower young players to compete and it doesn’t work. You only have to look at the prices championship clubs are willing to pay to be competitive. Will we be shelling out 5 million for a player?

Makes me wonder if Jose was brought in to get us back into the "sweet spot". One of the most bizarre appointments we have ever made.

    Twilight zone.

Money can be taken out of a football club in many different ways. It doesn't have to be a dividend at the end of each year. A salary, expenses, hospitality - that's all taking money out of a business. I think people have done that over the last 100 years.

I don't actually think either scenario is correct.

I can't comment on where the profit will go, but it seems like we'll sell at any point if the valuation of a player is met. Be that two years after signing a player or just six months.

If we kept our players for a reasonable amount of time, if we refused to sell in January, if we had replacements already lined up who are first team ready, I think the model we've adopted can be successful.

If our squad is permanently in the shop window I don't.

I also question whether you can really make a bigger profit in the Premier league. You can certainly make a much greater debt to get there.

Yes, the rewards can be huge, but to get there and to sustain a place there requires enormous investment.

Yes players can be sold for much more but their replacements cost much more. A player you can't sell who doesn't turn out to be any good can cost the club millions.

'Multi millionaires aren't interested in making a small profit.' Erm, yes they are. If you have a large portfolio of businesses making a small profit you make a large profit.

I don't see us ever spending the money or keeping the good players long enough to mount a Premiership challenge. I can see us making a profit at this level.

They haven't. The directors of Barnsley FC prior to administration never took any money out. They didn't have salaries or expenses. They put money in.

If we retain over the next few days Pinnock, Moore, Jackson etc and maybe but not necessarily require one more player first team ready and come the end of the season gain promotion then the spreadsheet /transfer policy will be a resounding success at this still early stages of the new ownership and plan.

As of now we still have a squad and staff more than capable of finishing top two, we have signed 2 young exciting prospects, we potentially have time to sign a new player, we don't have a big injury list and there is no evidence only rumours that we will lose any more players.

A lot of threads slagging off the owners with no real back up to the accusations.

Isn't every player on the planet in the shop window all the time though? You can pretty much buy any player you want if you're willing to meet the valuation a club places on that player. Whether you're Man City or Macclesfield Town.

Take Pinnock for example. If we do decide to sell at the 'reported' £6 million with add ons, is that a sign that the owners are only in this for profit or a case of a club meeting a crazy valuation that makes Pinnock the most expensive defender to ever leave League One? What would that do to the strategy long term? In theory it should allow us to invest in a better quality of young, hungry first-team ready players that bring more success and leave for even more value.

I think January 2017 has caused a lot of fans to question the strategy, and rightly so. But if I was in charge of Barnsley FC I'm not sure whether I would have done anything differently. I genuinely feel like we were caught between a rock and a hard place and without hindsight didn't know which route to go down. Feels like we've taken learnings from that though and if this squad was to be promoted we wouldn't be in that same position. The strategy should/could be a lot more successful in it's V.2 guise.

In reading this thread with great interest it got me wondering what might happen if we were seen by our owners to be too successful this season with the threat of promotion a realistic possibility.
I refer to our last promotion year when nothing was done to strengthen the team and relegation followed fairly quickly and we dropped back down to the cash cow league.
By being a yoyo club we get regular success, keep the fans' interest, sell season tickets, make a few bob, get on tv, get relegated, buy cheap unknowns, sell for profit, and as has been said earlier rinse and repeat.
Why do our bosses think it's ok to keep breaking up a winning team, even allowing our assistant coach to leave. What's next? Do they gnaw away at Stendel until he leaves and the rest of the season becomes a non event?

Can you point me in the direction of official reports announcing the so called break up of the current winning team? I keep seeing this claim but can't find anything official.

At the same time if you come across any examples of League One Assistant Managers being denied promotions to Premier League jobs that would also strengthen the case that we've acted incorrectly by letting Winkler leave.

No I can't but Barnsley seem to have a knack of pressing the self destruct button too easily and regularly.
