We're not the first people in the world to change our minds, guessing we wont be the last either. I think we'd probably look barmy to the rest of the world if we didn't have a second one.
We have had a people’s referendum to determine whether to leave the EU. So if we had a #LosersVote then the questions must be: 1) Deal on offer. 2) No deal. If we put the option of staying in the EU on that ballot then we have the real risk of the streets of Britain being set on fire.
It's not a case of changing our minds. The original vote was so flawed, stupid and unbalanced that it was never ever going to give a proper indication to people's views. The vote was Option 1 stay. Option 2. An infinite number of different options. It was like going into a restaurant and the menu simply says Sausage and chips £8 Something else £6
You assume people have changed their minds but I really don’t think they have. All a second referendum or block on Brexit would bring is riots and anarchy, possibly ripping the country apart for years to come and it would make us look undemocratic. If indeed a second referendum comes to fruition then it should only have two options on the ballot paper those being Theresa May’s deal or no deal at all, that way it appeases both sides. Personally, I’d be happy with a Norway style agreement but that’s just me.
Theresa May is my hero because she is doing a fine job of showing how damn difficult it is to leave and is thus scuppering Brexit splendidly. All these issues that have arisen since the original referendum....did any of us make our original decision based on those? No we did not. Some of us made up our minds to remain because we had the brains to realise that there WOULD be all sorts of issues that we did not know about that would cause problems and we have been proved right in that respect. Perhaps everyone should be made to sit and pass an exam including questions about the Irish backstop etc before being allowed to vote in another referendum.
small point but are monkeys actually british natives so surely you arent allowed a vote - other than that you talk a lot of sense By the way can the exam apply to MP's as well simple questions like explain how a managed no deal is actually possible explain the significance of Dover being only 22 miles from Calais and its impact on trade routes explain how the EU and Japan trade deal benefits the UK to the tune of 3.5Bn if we are leaving the EU Explain how our services industry which has a huge trading surplus with the EU is affected by ending Freedom of movement and leaving the single market Explain how we will fill the 4200 posts for Nurses auxiliaries etc in the the NHS if we only allow EU citizens earning over £30K per year in not to mention hotel and restaurant, fruit picking etc
Err most of the rest of the world already thinks we are just plain barmy already whether we have a second ref or not wont change that
Good post Half the Brexitters are rubbing their hands at how Brexit will stop freedom of movement from Pakistan,India and Africa
I have a feeling our MP would struggle to even understand those questions. I get two votes as I influence with two ladies who hang on my every word. Personally I will benefit from a temporary collapse in the value of the pound in any Brexit chaos as my international designerwear business will be offering bargains to those dastardly foreign people I trade with. But that is only if the mechanisms for international payments stay intact.
This question, just as it does with the politicians, fractures along the lines of how people voted in the first referendum, remainers seeing it as a chance to overturn the vote, leavers defending the vote. I think (if my experience of arguing the toss in the pub is an indication) is that views have become more entrenched on either side. I have never met anybody who has changed their mind. Just out of interest, I subscribe to the Times (which today has reasons for referendum 2 all over its opinion columns) and the Economist but occasionally read other websites and see the Daily Mail has done a complete Volte Face on Brexit, has anybody else noticed this? Are the establishment softening us up for another vote via the media poodles??
People get to change their minds over who;s in charge every 5 years. So why would people only get to think about it once when it's something that has an even longer term effect?
I think quite a few changed their minds the second the vote was closed and boris admitted the campaign bus was covered in lies (whilst using technicalities to justify not stopping the use of those lies) More have changed their minds now that the reality has set in and they have realised you can't just walk away from your commitments and expect to keep all the benefits. Now factor in that those people excluded from voting on age grounds and who felt aggrieved at the decision will now able to vote. People from an age group overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the EU. I think the vote would end in a landslide. The problem is that a lot of mistakes were made by decision makers in the run up to the last referendum which caused a flawed vote and now they're scared to admit it whilst on the leave side they deep down know that the vote was flawed and biased but won't admit it because they know what that means. As for nobody changing their minds, that's because you only hear from the extremists.
Yet Tyke'mon's poll on this forum shows the opposite... of those who voted, a 4.2% swing from Leave to Remain, but a 5.9% swing from Remain to Leave. This board is heavily Remain, if a net 1.7% swing to Leave were replicated across the country would that put the issue beyond doubt?
In my opinion, the only fair way to do a second referendum is to have 3 options on the ballot. Leave - No Deal Leave - May’s Deal Remain and revoke article 50 However, as much as I’d love it to be simple as that, even I as a die hard remainer realise that to be unfair. I would have it so that Remain needs to receive more votes than the other 2 options combined. So if it was 30%/25%/45% - no deal would be declared the winner
