Does this mean we've automatically qualified for Euro 2020 having won the group and got to the finals? Just asking for a mate that doesn't really understand the format very well......
Nope, it means we've got into the final 4 of the nations league in Portugal next summer. It also means were guaranteed a euro 2020 play off place, should we fail to qualify through our euro 2020 qualifying group.
Cheers. The explanation on the website makes no sense whatsoever...... well so my mate, who I was asking for says
I actually like the concept of the competition and the principle. The confusing part is the incorporation of the Euro 2020 qualifiers. They should have left the 2 competitions completely separate.
They already curbed that to I think a maximum of 6 subs for international friendlies, otherwise it wouldn't count towards the Fifa ranking.
With the way the Euros are at the moment with 24 teams participating, they should simply make them a straight knockout contest, then use the dates that were previously the qualifying period as a league. There are 55 UEFA nations. In a tournament, if you were to give 9 teams a first-round bye, that'd leave you with 46. 46 teams playing 23 games, with 23 winners. 23 + the 9 that were given the bye is 32, so you can then do a straight knockout 32 > 16 > 8 > 4 > 2. So instead of qualifying you could have five leagues of 9, and one league of 10. Three up three down. A league of 9 would require 16 matches per team. Well the current qualifiers, for teams in a group of six, they play 10 games. Then there are two games for the playoffs, then teams have already played four Nations League games, so it'd easily fit into the current schedule. Then the byes for the tournament would be the top 6 teams in the top group, plus the 3 that got promoted from the second group. You'd have an interesting league setup, followed by a knockout tournament decided by random draw.
