******* hell, this thread has taken a significant turn.

The bloke said lots of things that were unbelievably racist.

It was an intrenched view, maybe he was angry, but what he said deserves zero sympathy.

If he apologises then we should forgive, but to claim he isn’t a racist is ******* mental.

I'm not sure if you're including me in the 'most' comment but if you are I can tell you that I am not offended by him. I don't see how anyone can be offended on behalf of somebody else. I did find the outburst uncomfortable and I did wonder what I would have done had i been sat on that plane. My point was was not about being offended, my point was that I don't entirely believe him, I actually think that Jay is spot on in his post.

I do agree with you about this forum though.

The guy's action/words seen in the clip were utterly, utterly offensive.

Does that make this guy a racist? On what everyone has seen yes. On what his outlook on life in general is? I don't know.

Everyone has seen the clip - not everyone saw what happened that preceded that. Not that I am trying to defend that guy

What really offended me was that there were not many people coming forward to diffuse the situation.

I hope in that situation I would have 'educated' him.

It is by accident of birth that we are what we are......... ie white/not white, socialist/not socialist, straight/not straight

Has anything been said about what provoked the outburst?

Surely even the most rabidly racist nutter would think twice about shouting their mouth off in such a situation.

I don't think it's on video but apparently she took a long time to move and let him get to his seat. I reckon something similar to this has happened to most of us on a flight but most people deal with it in a more appropriate way. I've never seen anyone react as extremely as he did.

My wife called one of our neighbours an "old cow" once. Does that make her ageist? People often pick out their most distinguishing feature when arguing with someone. "Fat *******", "ginger-haired ****", "four-eyed ******" etc. They do in my world anyway. It makes them cruel not prejudicial.

No but he brought race into it. I once got into a minor altercation with a late middle aged Asian bloke who had smashed my daughter in the face with his bag and then been really rude to her. He was then quite aggressive and rude to me and I called him a miserable, cantankerous old tw@t. I said it through anger because I was angry with his attitude. I never brought his race or colour into it. If he'd been fat I would probably have brought that up but not his colour. That crosses a line in my opinion.

Yes she was at that moment in time ageist. It’s seen as socially acceptable (wrongly in my opinion) to use hair colour, body size etc to attack someone but not the colour of their skin. I don’t know what the answer is or where the line is drawn as I’m sure we all fall victim of using words to hurt people said in jest or otherwise.

It didn't make her ageist, because she doesn't have an issue with old people in general. You have to have a tendency towards something for an -ist to be used.
