Lost a few goals already this season with zonal marking, we lost very few goals in championship last year from set plays with man for man marking

1 penalty, 1 rebound from a good save from Davies, 1 possibly due to zonal marking. I hope we continue conceding goals at the same rate for the rest of the season.

I've never seen a zone score goal.
Joking aside I read somewhere before the game that Gillingham had scored a few from set plays.

Which shows we are defending well in open play. That's a good sign. We will concede from set plays that's football.

Ye I get that lads are doing excellent, just don’t think we look as comfortable at set plays

Is zonal marking preferred because it gives us the opportunity to break on a fast counter attack? Man to man might not allow that.

You could possibly argue the second goal against Scunny was due to zonal marking so one goal in 6 games. I thought last season we usually conceded 2 goals per game with whatever marking we were using then. I’m OK with the way we are defending at the moment. 4 clean sheets in 6 games is OK

Yesterday’s goal was more due to the ball dropping in just the right place for their guy to kick in. Arguably Davis should have done better with the initial header if you want to find somewhere to point blame
Or you could just recognise that when the opposition gets the ballin our box sometimes things drop for them and they score

My bug bear is no man on post - seems to be the thing in modern football. At school as full backs we were drilled to hang onto the post until the ball was out. Think it could have been prevented

Fair enough, not looking to point blame just an observation, I’m sure our guys would like the freedom to attack the ball in the opposition box . We all have our views, its certainly not a criticism of the team I’m loving the football

2 goals from set plays. In 6 matches. In that period of play weve scored 14. 2 goals in 6 matches and people are complaining? Christ on a bike

You could argue that Gillingham's goal yesterday was them exploiting our zonal marking couldn't you? It was a goal from a corner. What am I missing? The Gillingham player ran forward to head the ball while our players kept to their zone. Davies blocked it but the rebound was knocked in. At Scunthorpe their player ran in and headed home. The running motion allowing him to gain much more height from his jump than our defenders who were stationary in their zone.

We haven't conceded a goal from open play. The defence has been outstanding, from the whole team not just the defenders. But we've conceded two goals from crosses from set-plays that look (to me) to be due to our opponents exploiting the weakness in our defensive model or our execution of it. It's not a criticism a such, our goals against column is fantastic, but I thought sitting bull made a valid observation.

Agreed, very well. But don't think this was complaining, just striving for perfection.

Fair point - though Im not sure man to man marking would have made much difference - the guy made a sudden run to the near post and would almost certainly have been front of a defender man marking him so would probably have got the initial header away - though maybe under more pressure. Of course if we had had a man on the line by the post ...
