Just reading article on BBC site.. Ossett Albion and Ossett Town have merged.. Will now be known as Ossett United.. Aspirations of football league.. Be interesting to see if they can manage to get there or at least conference level. Gonna be hard to get the backing to break into the football league for somewhere the size of ossett.. Couldn't have picked a better time to merge though, finishing 15th & 16th in same league so nowt between em.
Bear in mind though Wakefield is the biggest city in the country without a professional football team so a large catchment area
According to this list, Salford is the largest city by population without a football league team, then Warrington, Dudley, York, Stockton-on-Tees, Mansfield, Telford, Slough, Poole, and a fair few others. https://thegeographist.wordpress.com/2016/04/07/largest-cities-uk-population/ Wakefield is 101st on the list of UK cities by population, with 99,000. Probably doesn't take the hinterland into account though.
Bang on Spuggy. The football followers I know in Ossett are all mainly Leeds fans, but there are a few that support Huddersfield Town. I personally know five or six Ossett folk who support the Reds.
Wakefield comprises five towns re- Castleford, Pontefract, Featherstone, Normanton and Knottingley. Including Ossett, South Kirby, Hemsworth, Moorthorpe and South Elmsall the collective population at the 2011 census was stated as being circa 325,000.
Tis true, Wakefield covers a very large area, Normanton is very much Leeds United and with Cas, Feth and Wakefield very much Rugby League orientated
