Often it's thrown at him that he should have gone to a bigger club. But he showed loyalty and was happy where he was. Anyone think of any other examples post 1992? Shearer when he turned man u down to go home maybe?
Neil Redfearn until we forced his hand. Clive Baker. Nicky Eaden until we treated him like ****. We’ve done Ok over the years. Carragher and Gerrard are the obvious ones I guess from the big teams.
Gerrard yeah I sort of excluded the man u ones as they were already at a top club and winning everything
Interesting story circulated Liverpool about Chelsea and Gerrard- wanted to leave but was 'persuaded not' ny some local 'gangsters'
Matt Le Tissier actually went to sign for Spurs. Fell thru because his Mrs at the time fell pregnant and didn' t want to move.
It's hardly the same level but Francessco Totti reportedly turned down Real Madrid to stay at Roma for his whole career. At one point he could have probably signed for anyone but stayed loyal. I don't really blame anyone for moving if it enhances their career and earnings. I'd probably do the same but it's still a kick in the teeth when it affects your club.
Theres no comparison with players at Liverpool and Manchester Utd staying loyal as opposed to Barnsley. Neville and Gerrard I suppose found it easier to reject other clubs whilst on a million quid a day. Bit harder when your club can only give you a fiver a week pocket money. Bobby Hassell
