First round of the league cup in 1990. Won 1-0, I think it was Steve Cooper who scored, his last goal for us.
I can also remember going to Bury on a wet midweek night, I Am sure we had kenny Burns playing that night, a long time ago
I seem to remember the first time we went to the old Wigan ground in the Clarke era, at half-time everyone walked across the pitch to stand behind the Wigan goal again. Might be my old memory though I also went to the RL ground about the same time- far more impressive. Did that become the site of the DW? That corner uncovered terrace at Ayresome Park was foul as well.
To be fair most grounds in those days were complete **** holes. Behind the Brewery stand was horrific. People pissing in the open, litter and **** everywhere.
Southend and Bury probably the worst I've been to - just very ramshackle without having much character in the way some old stadiums do. I'm sure there are worse I've not been to, Luton for example.
Cambridge United ground in the 80s like a rabbit hutch. Away end at Millmoor. Loftus Road. The Old Wembley.
Elm Park. Bog was like a greenhouse peeing on the floor, no bog roof and Moss growing through the walls. Could step off the coach and be in the turnstiles though as it was proper door to door. Won 3 nill I think in mid 90s.
For me Mansfield’s ground was grim also when mk dons played at national hockey stadium was shocking
worst for views were either Wimbledons current ground - or when Brighton were playing at the Withdean. Crawleys temporary stand with a gazebo roof was quite interesting too Biggest dump - tricky one as most have been revamped now I never liked Filbert Street though
it still is - but its been improved a bit and is definitely better than the ground Wimbledon are currently using
I always liked Kenilworth road - turnstiles in someones front room, walking through gardens to the stand and when it was terrace it wasnt so bad in the away end - think the seats for midgets have made it worse now
The Shay (Halifax) In the mid/late 60's I'm sure had a speedway track around the pitch which cut off each corner! It also had a golf driving range behind one of the goals. Chester in the same period was also dismal.
