I was over in Worksop doing some work on my old house at the weekend. Got bored of painting and decided to go watch Worksop Town play Ashton Athletic in the FA Cup Preliminary round.
    I enjoyed it!
£5 to get in. Tidy little ground. Small stands on all four sides though one of them was a corrugated shed.
Standard of football was pretty dire though there were a few lads playing who had skill and looked capable of better things. All in all though the passages of silky football were never longer than 5 seconds and there weren't too many of them!
However, it was a nice, relaxing atmosphere. Listening to the locals talking they obviously knew their non league football inside out. No stress, tearing out of hair. They seemed to accept that the game was what it was.
A million miles away from the hype of Sky and the Premiership and all the better for it.
I'm going to try and get to the Rotherham match on Saturday from over here in Chester but it's touch and go if I'll make it. If I'm looking like being half an hour or so too late I might pop in to watch Penistone Church, see if they've got a replacement for Alfie or Conor.

We played a pre-season friendly there about 93 or 94. A Worksop fan shouted at Lee Butler "I bet you're the only white man in Barnsley". Still the most bizarre thing I've heard anyone shout at a football match.

A mate of mine from work used to play for their u21's. He talks about it as though he had a glittering football career.

He was, 2004-2007. With Peter Price and John Peachey as his assistants! Strange that because Peachey and particularly Price predated Ronnie's time at Oakwell.
