lol oh well i watched it and wasnt a pen ,video is on page 2 of this sunderland forum https://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/the-penalty.1453204/page-2
I didn't think it was a penalty at the game but we were at the other end of the pitch so I wanted to watch it again. I still don't think it was a penalty.
Penalties are subjective decisions and will remain so even if VAR is fully implemented. If you are making that challenge you are entering the zone where the referee might adjudge it to be a penalty. It would have been better to shepherd the player and prevent him from getting the cross in. But talented defenders like Pinnock sometimes want to go further and actually win the ball, which comes with risks.
Would it have been given in our favour I don’t think so the standard of refereeing in the EFL is a joke
Watching the above it's impossible to see if it's a penalty or not unless you have x-ray vision that allows you to see through Pinnock and their player. The Sunderland player was going nowhere and Pinnock shouldn't have dived in. Once he had then the ref takes over. Pinnock had the player where he wanted him but then lost control of the situation by making a challenge he didn't need to make.
So: 1) Are you seriously suggesting that there is some sort of bias against Barnsley? 2) If the standard of refereeing is as good (or bad) for every team, what does it matter?
Whilst I don't go along with conspiracies that the FL & referees have it in for Barnsley FC (why would they?) I find that the frequency of big decisions going against the smaller clubs and favouring the big named teams (with bigger followings potentially drawing bigger TV revenues), highly suspect. Most likely it is a subconscious bias meaning poor referees are easily swayed by reputation, a large crowd and named players applying pressure. The referee last night seemed to blow the whistle before the ball was even out of play and could not possibly have seen the contact (as I posted last night) due to a) the distance he was from the ball b) the fact the attacking player was directly in his line of sight. You only have to see the direction the ball took after the tackle to see the defender got the ball with his left leg so could not have taken the player out. Furthermore the aformentioned speed at which the blew meant he had no time to consult with any linesman who may have had a better view or even see a raised flag (if there indeed was one). Putting aside the natural bias as a fan and the "Infamy, infamy, they've all got it infamy" that comes with that, trying to be objective it does appear to be a common theme amongst fans of smaller clubs that big decisions seem to go against them whether they should have been awarded penalties or ones given against them, more often than would reasonably be expected ) this even applies to the top 5 or 6 teans in the Premiership vs the rest. Sadly as an F1 fan we see the same -financially driven??-bias towards certain teams drivers. Penultimate race in Mexico with Ocon being penalised in favour of Verstappen who breached two rules (forcing a driver off the track and causing a collision) with Ocon being punished just because MV is the new Hamilton (according to some) and was leading the race and Ocon in a faster car with new tyres was unlapping himself (perfectly entitled to do so) The media circus with very few exceptions were blaming Ocon but the fan base were overwhelmingly blaming Verstappen. Money talks!
Also experience talks....mcgeedy was cute there...he saw the tackle was coming in and did what was required to get the decision. If we had got the same situation...we would probably suggest that the tackle was a silly one to make in that position and these things happen. The fact we hardly get pena (is it 2 in 2 years oe something?) is annoying but we have to be cute...remember hedges getting booked for simulation the other week.
Why on earth defenders insist on going in with the wrong leg is a mystery to me. He could have wrapped his right leg around that easily enough without giving the attacker a chance to go down. Footballing basics ffs.
He is left footed he plays on the right of center to accomadate for Lindsay who is even more left footed.
More annoyingly was that was a legitimate pen I was stood at pitch level at Shrewsbury and he definitely got tripped then denied decision and then booked to add insult.
Simply, whether or. It Pinnock should have made the challenge, it wasn’t a penalty - we’ve been awarded 1 (or is it 2?) pens in nigh on 2 years, despite numerous “stone walkers” - it really is a standing joke now!
