What they definitely need to deal with this is more guns...

It's OK. The article said it was an isolated incident.

Too right it was an isolated incident.

There hasn't been another child firing guns at a school in america since a 12 year old was shooting at one nearly 4 weeks ago.

Virginia hasn't even had a school shooting since November

And the city of Newport news hadn't had a school shooting for over 1200 days prior to this one. They were doing well all things considered.

Good job the Republicans have got their House Speaker sorted out now so they can finally get on with ignoring the problem.

Is the argument not more guns, so teachers should have guns too? So, therefore, they'd expect her to shoot back ... AT A SIX YEAR OLD. Course she wouldn't.

America, you are one massive cult (that's not a typo to get around the swear filter either - though that word would work too).

America ‘the land of the free’, if you are a right wing nutknob wielding a weapon.

They, as a country are spiralling into a modern day civil war. People might balk at countries in the east and Middle East but in the next century there’ll be far bigger super powers than the US. When you strip away the facade of consumerism America is as backward as a third world country.

Terrible education, health service for the rich only, a 2 party political system in disarray and a culture war in full swing.

I love visiting the US and was there in November but it’s a tinder box ready to be lit at the moment, if it isn’t already smouldering.

I agree that gun culture in U.S. is mostly to blame but in this instance I would point the finger at parents for not ensuring the child had no access to a gun or any weapon (highly unlikely he obtained it anywhere other than the home environment).
Also how was the child being brought up? Certainly at six considering using a gun against anyone he disagrees with suggests he has not been taught any respect or consideration for anything or anyone (to put it mildly) . We all know of cases where come children have anger management issues but that should already have been picked up on. Instead of focusing on metal detector procedures at the school etc. the authorities should certainly take him into care and the parents investigated for neglect and held to account for his actions.

Interesting looking at the 'holdouts' profiles in the McCarthy Speaker voting. At least two are pro Trump- 'election fraud' 'nut jobs' on the extreme right of the Republican Party. Most are pro-Gun lobbyists and anti-Biden having voted overwhelmingly for Pro-Trump reforms whilst he was President and very much against Biden proposals now he is President.

As TN says above, for all its apparent 'wealth' many Americans live in a third World environment and that wealth does not benefit the average American. Education, Health care and quality of life is poor.

The American model is something to be avoided at all costs but, unfortunately, more and more of it sems to be making its way across the Atlantic to our shores.

How's that not linked to gun culture though. I'm quite confident there's not a single person on this forum who would ever had access to a hand gun at the age of six because there would never have been one in the house.
If there's no gun culture there's no chance of kids accidentally or on purpose misusing them.

Not disagreeing. As my opening sentence stated , "Gun culture is mostly to blame.....".
That said, many rural households in UK - Farmers etc. own shotguns and rifles etc but laws are much tighter re licences, kept in locked cabinets etc. My point was though, that regardless of the ease access to firearms in U.S. the shocking aspect of this incident is the fact that a 6 year old got hold of one -loaded- and then intentionally used it against a person which is a far cry from a child finding a loaded gun in the house and accidentally firing it. Presumably it either had the safety off or he knew how to take the safety off!

Well, irresponsibility and owning hand guns are very close bedfellows I reckon.
Apparently there was a kid in that class who took bullets into school the previous week and then daid he was going to bring the gun in too.
    Unbelievable.

From what I have seen of the latest voting fiasco for the election of the Speaker for Congress add Republicans (and the NRA)to your irresponsible list.
