Going into the Newcastle game I remember some decent games at Oakwell between the two - remember my first recollection being a 1-0 home win with Aylott possibly scoring the goal.

Think I want to know is about the allegded trouble that was attached to that game - heard a pool table was thrown through a pub window by the Geordies and bizzarly a story about a parrot being set on fire ? Was any of this true - only 11/12 at the time so not sure about it ....

Not sure about how true that story is but it was doing the rounds at the time :) Pub in question was the old Ring O Bells on Wellington Street, later to become Peels Bar.

My old man used to drink in Ring O Bells and he always claims he saw it happen but I'm not old enough to know so I personally have no idea

They used to stop off in Hemsworth en route from the A1 Loads of them crammed into transit vans.

Can't remember any bother though, as there were probably too many of them, but they seemed good lads at the time. Just beer and footy.

Remember 30/40 of them throwing bottles at us from the back of a furniture van as we were walking down Oakwell lane;)

Bloody hell, I can... they ran through the town centre causing havoc. Boots locked all their doors to stop them rampaging through it.

After the match some of their fans were demolishing a brick wall up Belgrave Road to give them ammunition. They lobbed some at the house owner who had come out to complain. It was the worst violence I've ever seen in the vicinity of Oakwell.

My wife worked for Mills Kemp and Brown solicitors at the time and spent hours typing up statements etc from the hoards of Geordies who had obtained free board and lodgings for the weekend.

Meant when they stopped in Hemsworth. They just took over all the local pubs clubs on the way ☺

    I was at that game

A couple of months back I posted some photos I took of McCarthy, Glavin, Parker etc coming off at halftime. I don't recall any talk of the trouble that you mention, but then again I was living in Cambridge at the time.

I've heard the story of the parrot before, and although I wasn't at the game I do remember going into town and hearing stories about trouble all over the centre. Including at least one shop - someone mentioned Boots - being shut due to fighting in it. I was only 12-14 or so at the time though.

Yes not bad Westie, and you ?

I hated Newcastle fans from that date until they they played us last time when they were in the Championship when I was amazed how well behaved and friendly they were.

It was not an urban myth I have never known a day like it in Barnsley ever. I was living in Leicester at the time and came up for the game with a Geordie mate. Were walking on wellington Street when the said pool table came through the window followed by a number of Newcastle fans from inside the pub Barnsley fans were scrapping with geordies and it was quite nasty. It was the same all over town hundreds of Geordies trying to cause havoc but to be honest Barnsley were no angels. As to the parrot incident it happened in the pub that was on the bottom of Sheffield road near the alambra, they had a parrot on a stand which got pushed onto the open fire in the pub. This story featured in the next weeks chronicle. There was also an incident I remember of a spray paint can being thrown onto fire in another pub and exploding.

Haven't a clue why the day turned out this way but there had been a number of incidents with coach loads of Geordies stopping off around Barnsley over the previous year on their way to games.

I believe the parrot met its maker in the Manx Arms.

Thanks for replies as I said was too young to remember I do remember it being first time at a Barnsley match I'd felt scared- never really liked the Newcastle fans - find them to be quite arrogant without any real reason to be.
