A sensible person if found in that situation would either try and very slowly pull the car over to the side and park it up until the crowds have gone OR completely switch the engine off and try get a record of any damage to your car for a future insurance claim (they'd be able to ask the council for any CCTV footage either)

He's instead used his vehicle as a weapon and put 27 people in hospital including children, for me he needs to be charged with attempted murder and locked up for a long time.

I've just seen some footage and it coincides with my daughters friend who saw the car on Dale street. It wasn't going slowly, there were police/ ambulance around so it could have safely stopped sooner.

I assume the patriots are waving banners and hunting down buildings containing middle aged white men as we speak??

I find it quite distasteful that you’re putting words into my mouth. On more than one occasion I have said he should not have driven into the crowd. There’s evidence that he was being a **** to start with, but I do think the blokes smashing the car up should take some responsibility. He’s wrong for doing it, just said the circumstances aren’t as clear as people think.

I think it's a sad indictment of this country that the Police felt the need to announce that the arrested man was a 53 year-old white British man. The implication being that if he was something different they wouldn't have said anything about him. Which would of course have been taken by the Faragists as an open invitation to attack buildings (they're not hotels anymore) housing asylum seekers. Shocking state of affairs.

"A 53-year-old man from West Derby has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs, police say."

Car followed ambulance through blocked road, police saypublished at 15:32
    15:32

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of the Merseyside Police now says that they believe the driver of the car was able to access the road after following an ambulance that was attending to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack.

Access on Water Street, which was blocked she says, was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to that individual.

As with all large events we have armed policing presence throughout the day. There was no intelligence that an incident of this nature would take place - it is not being treated as terrorism.

Dangerous driving and drug driving will be an easy charge to make stick. Not sure about attempted murder but the court and a jury will decide on that. He'll be facing a lengthy ban and hopefully a custodial sentence.

I used to live in West Derby. Or where West Derby meets Knotty Ash at least. When I did my nurse training and then worked in A&E at Alder Hey kids hospital.

I wonder if the incident in Liverpool has made our own club sit up and finally take notice about Oakwell Lane.

I've seen many cars vandalised over the years on there.

Of course the difference between Liverpool and Oakwell is the road was closed to vehicles in Liverpool and the car shouldn't have been there in the first place. Cars have every right to be on Oakwell Lane but I suspect road closures aren't for BFC to implement.

And of course if Oakwell Lane was shut, another little Barnsley road would become a bottleneck.

Nowt wrong with Oakwell Lane apart from a common sense issue relating to a small set of drivers and a small set of fans.

EDIT: Although as a user of Oakwell Lane, I do agree that traffic manangement could be better for an hour before and after the game, but I see that as a Policing or council issue, not the club

They'd probably be better blocking Oakwell Lane for an hour before/after kick-off and diverting all traffic left or right on Pontefract Road. Going right you can get onto Sheffield/Doncaster/Wakefield Roads quite easily and left takes you away from town.

I don’t think anyone was trying to justify it, just sharing what may have led to it.

I’ve been driving in the middle of football traffic myself before (as i’m sure a lot of us on here have) and it’s stressful. Now i’d never drive into a crowd obviously, because i’m not a **** but i’m not particularly surprised it happened. If someone smashed in the back window of his car and threw a flare in, I think it’s fair to say he probably wasn’t thinking particularly clearly.

The fact he was even able to get his car there is the biggest problem for me. Should never have been allowed to happen in a million years.

Apparently he tailgated an ambulance to get onto the street. He was also under the influence of drugs which probably explains his erratic behaviour. Just been on BBC News.
