I think you're overreacting here. George is a young lad, who has only been with us for what, two months? He's had to uproot and move across the country and things haven't gone to plan, but that's through no fault of his own. He's proven that he's a good player and can get goals and assists in a poor Colchester team last season. The way we are playing at the minute, I wouldn't expect any fringe players or even any of the new players to walk into the starting eleven. A player like Moncur, at this stage of his progression needs full, competitive games, and at the minute, he's not going to get that with us, however, who's to say that a few months at Peterborough, and he won't come back and force himself into the team? He's a young lad, at the start of a three year contract with ourselves, so for people (not soley aimed at yourself) to write him off so early, is quite frankly baffling. We haven't 'wasted' £500,000 at all - this has been decided that at this stage of proceedings, it is the correct move for us and for George, and I say good luck to him. Go to Peterborough, do well and force yourself into Hecky's plans for the latter part of the season.
When we recruited him in the summer, I think we thought about a transition towards a three man midfield - be that 433 or 4231. Undoubtedly, he has lots of technical attributes and obviously fits in with our recruitment plan. Unfortunately in pre-season he clearly looked like he was struggling as part of a two in a 442 system. We tried 'fitting him in' against Northampton in the cup when we adjusted our shape, but it was clear that the team didn't respond to this change and the team generally struggled with this new shape. Moncur is used to being the main player in a team, in Colchester he was their number 10 and key play-maker. Thus far its not worked out for him and hes moved to Peterborough who should suit his style of play. This move will allow him to compete at the top level of league one with pressure to win every week. It remains to be seen as to whether or not he will come back to us. If he doesn't then I'm sure we'll look to recoup the majority if not all of the outlay we paid when we signed him from Colchester. In this scenario, it doesn't make the club look foolish - not all signings work. Di Maria at Manchester United faied to adapt and on a less grander scale, Leon Britton at Sheffield United when he joined and soon left.
No it isn't. It's obvious that right now he doesn't fit in the plans as the team is playing well in a very specific way. Perhaps he is going out on loan to a club who play a similar way to us so that he can get some experience playing this style and will then come back to us in a few months ready to slot into the first team or make more appearances from the bench
have we made a boo boo (thats a nice way of saying co*ck up by the way!!) with george moncur ? i can see the idea of sending players out on a half or full season long loan, and that is better than keeping them as just bench warmers. i didnt like the idea of sending kayden jackson off to grimsby but what on earth was the reason in signing shaun tuton, hes off to grimsby as well now. these loan deals can and usually do bring about a proper contract signing, so what if we were to lose all those players mentioned at one point or another this season. and what are the chances eh of us signing adam armstrong even if he does really well during his loan!
The Connor who bosses the middle of the park now, is not the guy we signed from Plymouth. Coaching, game time and buying into an ethos changed him as a player. No reason the won't be said of Moncur next September.
