The Irish Anthem. First time I’ve heard it. Quite a nice tune. Anyone know it’s name? I was expecting the Soldier’s Song.
Irelands Call. They play both Amhrán na bhFiann and Irelands Call at their home games and only Irelands Call at the away games.
Back in the 60's and 70's they played Danny Boy ( if I remember correctly) Scotland used Scotland the Brave...along with God Save the Queen....there's a rugby site that says otherwise but I'm not sure its correct.
There’s a song sang at Welsh football matches by a folk singer than translates as we are still here, have to say as an atmosphere/occasion it takes some beating.
Here's the English translation. Yma o Hyd - We (the Taffs) despite oppression/tyranny by the English the Welsh Language and Culture have survived. We are still here. (see end of Verse 5 - line 6) see You Tube - 'Wales v Ukraine 2022 Dafydd Iwan' for a brilliant rendition. One thousand and six hundred years, a time too long to remember. When Magnus Maximus2 left Wales, in the year 383, leaving us a whole nation, and today - look at us! We are still here, we are still here, in spite of everyone and everything, in spite of everyone and everything, in spite of everyone and everything. We are still here, we are still here, in spite of everyone and everything, in spite of everyone and everything, in spite of everyone and everything. We are still here. Let the wind blow from the East,3 let the storm roar from the sea, let the lightning split the heavens, and the thunder shout "encore!" Let the tears of the faint-hearted flow, and the servile lick the floor. Despite the blackness around us, we are ready for the breaking of the dawn! We are still here, we are still here, in spite of everyone and everything, in spite of everyone and everything, in spite of everyone and everything. We are still here. We remember that Macsen the Emperor left our country in one whole piece. And we shall shout before the nations, "We'll be here until Judgement Day!" Despite every Dic Siôn Dafydd,4 despite old Maggie5 and her crew, we'll be here until the end of time, and the Welsh language will be alive! Yes superb performance of a brilliant anthem - it's about allegiance to our country, the language and culture. (Could have done with Barry John - Gareth Edwards Yesterday !)
That’s one, think first time I saw it was at the Ukraine game. Loved the video afterwards where the squad were all joining in too.
Thanks. 'Yma o Hyd' - 'We're Still Here' is brilliant 'anthem' - gets the feeling/mood of the supporters just right. Similarly with 'Flower of Scotland.' 'God save the King' has it's place but I don't think that is at a sports venue.
